Yeah, I wonder whether the ubiqitious nature of the internet is amplifying this current sense of disquiet and making it seem more serious than previous unrest. Or perhaps most societies have always been on a knife-edge and the internet has provided a way of collectivising dissenters, meaning we stand on the edge of huge social reforms.

It seems unlikely to me that the status quo will change, but i'm pretty unhappy generally at the moment so that will undoubtably have a bearing on my outlook, which is careering towards complete nihilism at times. I think change needs to happen, it seems blaringly obvious to me that the way we live is unsustainable and unfair, but I cant see what would instigate reform in this country.

The Economist newspaper:
Greater integration of Europe, mainly centred on the 17 Euro countries which will form a coherent bloc that will allow them to dominate internal politics. Germany will likely provide the framework for internal management and France will attempt to be another dominant leader. This will help exclude more liberal states like the UK and the Scandinavian countries and allow more directive policies.

That isn't for certain either, though.

From what else I have seen/read/heard:

In the further, if not far, future, the economic inequalities that have withered most pension savings and left lots of others unable to save, coupled with a shrinking working population and a growing aging one, will mean a crisis of massive proportions to sustain decent living standards.

Another could be a slack attempt at mitigating climate change resulting in an unneccessarily expensive bill for hurried work (the Stern Report said the faster we get things done the cheaper they will be).

Lack of provision for energy production means shortages. The best way to avoid this would be to stop using finite fossil fuels, encourage public transport as a system modelled on Japan's, have wholesale investment in efficient 'renewable' energy and make everything that uses some sort of power as efficient as it can possibly be.

Running out of resources to make things. Due to the unforeseen consequences of the manufacturing paradigm of disposability and cheap production at the expense of recycling the earth could well run out of usable resources. Manufacturing should be geared towards considering products' whole lifecycle including recycling at the end and non-toxic application of materials should be considered in all circumstances.

The only reason america's fucked is because all these rich republicans believe god gave them the right to be rich and that they shouldnt have to pay taxes. The worlds always been fucked in some way or another and im sure it will keep plodding on this way for some time to come yet.

I agree that there is plenty to change, but I can't help but think the general trend for the last 1000 years or so has been incredibly positive. We don't get Typhoid from our drinking water, we don't get forced to work as effective-slaves in the Workhouse if we're poor, we're no longer at the mercy of elites who can decide to flip the country's religion overnight and start burning people... everyone gets an education, everyone gets healthcare, everyone gets access to things like the Citizen's Advice Bureau. We've got the European Court of Human Rights to back us up... but income is definitely still unfairly distributed and we're certainly not all born equal yet.

Progress is eternal - don't let the fact that there's more to come get you down.. it should be exciting to strive for. We've come a long way, baby...

Okay then, most of Japan's public transport... though Tokyo is a slight anomaly given that it is (or was not so long ago) the most densely populated place on Earth (it overtook Mexico city to the top spot).

Still, can you imagine a station in London getting 5 million people through a day without any problems? Shinjuku does Trains also run on time and get classed as 'late' if they're 1 minute out

I reckon not a lot is gonna change. Infact probably nothing. Not for us (UK) anywhoo
