the best commerically-available taiko samples i've heard are in battery's dragon kit, and ableton's taiko instrument.

Ableton has everything! :corndance:

I just got some Marimbas samples by Bolder Sounds, they were free and I count them as tribal percussion -- they are native to Africa.

Taikos have long been my favorite drums, period. It's actually kind of amazing how few decent quality freebies there are out there - I'm handy wif a google search when it comes to samples and rarely find anything. The stock Taiko drums in any GM module, which you're all but guaranteed to own already if you have any gear or apps with the GM1 soundbank, are actually OK if you layer and re-amp/re-sample them. Re-amping can actually do pretty amazing things here, like adding harmonics that weren't part of the original sound.

Of the pro packs, the Battery one def. sounds the best to me - really well recorded, clean, full - but I'm a DIY'er and have found something even better IMO:

Find out if there's a Taiko dojo near where you live; many major urban centers in America & Europe have Taiko clubs now that give performances from time to time, or better yet - ask if you can come to a rehearsal or something like that. I'm lucky enough to live a few blocks from the Japantown neighborhood of my city (San Francisco) and we have a pretty well known dojo that performs indoor & outdoor concerts regularly.
