Strictly speaking cadaver a daw should run cubase and nothing else. But obviously you want to use it for other stuff so I am not helping you by saying that. I guess I want to feel good about the fact that I have to reboot another os everytime i want to play a game or use the internet.

Tell u what, I'll shut up and just pat myself on the back. :)

I guess it has no relevance to a laptop but I use a pci card for asio, but still use the onboard sound dev for system sounds, ie line out on ob to line in on pci, best of both worlds really.

I used to think that good quality pci card was extremley important, I couldnt beleive people used onboard sc's, but it's not if you dont record externally. If you produce entirely in the box then your signals will stay digital. So basically i guess u only need a high quality pci/firewire if you want high qual ins/outs and qual d/a convertrs.

I havent looked at sound cards for a long time but the one that I remember being AMAZING value for money was the EMU0404 for 40£ must be half that now, it can even do 192k. It even came with proteusx sampler with all those cool filters. I've got one but modern motherboards are small and graphics cards are so gargantuan that I cant fit it in.

download dpc latency checker: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

it should all be green, if not then you may have a driver causing the spikes. disable all startup programs, and disable things in device manager until you find the culprit.

also as has been said, update cubase to the latest patch. also update your operating system and drivers. disable anti virus too and see if it makes a difference.

yeah i run on cubase 6, its much more cpu 'friendly'.. what i used to (to save cpu) was instead of adding inserts on the channel inspector, right click on the clip and click process, there you can use the inserts, but they wont apear on the inspector but they save cpu. Also freeze some channels when your not using them, i'm not sure if thats available on cubase 5.
