Not the original, but joined and definitely pushed that band to play faster and brought blastbeats to everyone by touring the fuck out of europe. The early stuff is like a more aggressive peace punk/Crass kinda feel. It's cool listening to all their stuff cause they go from this kinda shitty punk band, to this beast of a band pioneering grindcore, to more techy death metal stuff. He left when they headed in the death metal direction because he wanted to start bringing in loops and samples. Think about the early 90s, death metal and electronic music? Not gonna mix. the dudes pretty much said "this is napalm death, we play like this. if you want to use loops do a side project" Instead of doing a side thing he left and started Scorn with the OG singer of Napalm Death. ND put out several meh albums, their recent stuff is better and live in the last few years they were awesome. This band and the others active in the late 80s hardcore punk scene are what grindcore is supposed to be. Raw and pissed off about real issues, not screaming about raping dogs to be offensive.


TLDR: Blastbeats, hardcore punk, grindcore, and death metal all have direct ties and owe some of their popularity to Scorn.

yeah, I love Mick Harris music. my friend played me scorn in the 90s and I always wanted to be able to make those dark sounds like him. godflesh too

If you like that slow stealthy stuff with a heavy emphasis on dreary you should really check out an album by Speedy J called Shocking Hobby. Came out in 2000 and is like no other music he has ever done, if you're familiar with his techno stuff.

Speedy J did slow dreary stuff?? Wicked - his production is tops, so I am always down to hear any of his styles.

Yeah Speedy J was always quality, that album is great. Loudboxer too, and the other stuff he did on Novamute, though more techno and less break beat influenced.

His live shows were amazing too, just him abusing 2 or 3 samplers live.

he formed scorn with both nic (first napalm death singer) but also justin k (of napalm death, godflesh, jesu, final, techno animal etc fame). first 3 albums were more industrial metal oriented. nic left the band in 95. after that it was all about the bass

thanks OP for reminding me of scorn, actually had one of his newer albums collecting dust no idea why i forgot about it.
i remember listening to it on my way home from a breakcore gig, i went early cause i shared a spliff with the singer and couldnt deal with all the bass

not sure if i want a scorn Q&A tho, i think i remember him writing ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME.

oh and if you're into scorn you should definetly check out techno animal, just as oldschool, just as narsty.

btw incase someone wonders how they get their bass timbres, it's done by starting with sub/808 kicks and distorting em rather than complex layered waveforms.
kinda how the dnb basslines were made before the heavily modulated reese took over.

anyway i dont wanna derail this thread, as much as i'd like a linkdump of noisy jungle/breakcore i think we should further discuss scorn (and to some extent the other mentioned artists) production like wub already did.
what i wonder for example is how to get such hard, gritty drums and generally distorted sounds without constantly risking clipping. most of the music in this thread was made using analogue mixing desks so i guess they just clipped the shit out of everything on purpose which you can't do in software unless you want everything to sound like complete crap

Both probably, but Alec Empire/ATR sampled some jungle and dnb records. Some of his breaks were amens from guys like Dillinja and co, just smashed to hell.

Also speaking of Alec Empire, he worked a bit with Kevin Martin/The Bug and Justin Broadrick (Napalm Death) for this project that I mentioned on the first page (released on Alec's DHR label in 97/98):

thanks for this thread folks! mick harris is my favourite producer and i appreciate the insights to his sound. i guess it's been pointed out already but he uses all hardware and runs everything hard into the red.
