less is more when it comes to stages in processing
that and my bud andy (dillusion) posted up some samples a long time ago that serve as a good base point from his virus and emu and other outboard

I would suggest try moving some buttons on your VST of choice while the note is being played to try make it feel a bit more organic. Get the right things moving at the same time may stop it from sounding like a few detuned squares done in 30 seconds.
I think its where most of the stuff you hear now is made on massive. it has this "digital" and "synthetic" character to its sound
there's an idea - get an old hardware synth and sample some of those badbuoy reeses
or look up some old roland reese samples or something
I think people have trouble thinking out of the box (me included) when it comes to 'jamming' with a soft synth. You are often sitting down in a chair using a mouse playing with one button at a time. When people used hardware they had two hands and could move two things at once and this could open up some interesting options.
I also think soft sytnhs are easy to make shit sounds out of the box but require some attention when it comes to making things sound warmer and not so digital.
Slapping a distortion unit/crusher on everything to the max wont help imo.

can't find my prest mp3 from my micron preset pack, but loads of reeses
like i said less is more and it's best to have a good initial sound from a good synth (not massive imo unless you wanna sound digital)

a juno, virus, or any other analog modeled or analog work better than things like massive
be it detuned saws or squares

also barely processed reese fun
Soundcloud
easy to get twisting etc without distortion and over processing
tempted to finish it and reprocess the reese to current standards

Notch filters, Chorus, and Distortion/Saturation seem to always do me some good.
I always try to make sure that my notch modulations are not in the same spot each time too or else I'm left with a big hole in the sound.
Working on a Reese-oriented tune at the moment, will upload on here soon!
I also think composition plays a huge role in how your patch actually sounds when everything comes together.
