I don't have reason but I'd love to hear some experimentation from what joshisrad said. Is it really that easy?

Uh not quite but not horrendously far off
I used my friend's Reason cuz I don't have it but if I get back there this or next week I'll render an example and explain exactly the process

I appreciated that attempt. Anyways, I'll look forward to hearing that josh.

i am also very interested in this sound, but i dont use reason :(
anyone got any ideas for using massive or fm8?

Can't do it with Massive. It's very specific and requires the right throaty waveform. Massive's wavetables don't sound like Malstroms. I've tried a shit ton of them not just modern talking and scrap yard.

FM8, uh if you can figure out how to modulate the right operator amounts using the right waveforms at the right ratios.. maybe. Shit ton of work tho more than it's worth, and you might not even get the exact sound.

LITERALLY that sound is Malstrom, and it's playing SPECIFIC wavetables so if you want to recreate it, you need those wavetables.

joshirad said everything that you should do.
You should experiment guys ! And it's a good practice to split frequencies.

Koan Sound Uses Maelstrom!

So in an interview Koan Sound said they use Maelstrom for their basslines. Culprate as well, can anyone give me tips on Graintable Synthesis. Or how they could achieve that reese sounding talking bassline in Reason use some of Reason's processing techniques. Any help would be appreciated.

The Interview is right here: http://dubstepdemocracy.blogspot.com/20 ... sound.html

try using the throat wave form on one of the oscs and automating the index slider manually in time with the wobs or however you want. it will give you a growling sound. also try automating the scale knob on a scream 4 with the index. these two combines with some pitch automation as well can give you some interesting growls. you could use a saw on the other osc or just create a separate reese patch and layer the sounds etc..

They use resampling so what I would do is go to YouTube and watch some reese bass reason tutorials sample it and go from there

There was already a koan sound thread where I explained how to get that exact sound with Maelstrom.

Just use the Throat wavetable in Malstrom and modulate the index (with an envelope if you want or an LFO or whatever) and then you can sine shape it and comb filter it in Malstrom. Then you can do shit like use the Screamer thing to add overdrive or distortion or tube or tape or scream distortion or whatever you want, but not too much. And the vocoder in Reason you can also use that as an EQ to shape the sound more. Pretty simple surprisingly, the magic is all in the Throat wavetable. You could also use the other vocal ones just mess with the octave knobs to see how they sound, the Elektrik one for example sounds better in the higher octaves.

You can just start a new project, do these things, mess with the mod wheel changing whatever parameters like index or the shift or whatever and just bounce a bunch of automations over a bar or so to audio, chop them up for later and fuck with em in whatever sampler you choose.

Stupidly simple. It's funny that it's such a "well-kept secret" right now for how easy it is to get that exact sound.

fruity granulizer is the one for this as well. splitting frequencies is the best tip, the high end frequencies become a mess if you just add FX to the whole bass.
also iv roughly learnt how to do this in harmor with just the synth and no external FX, automating the phaser and two filters does great things

I was messing around today in malstrom (which ive never been able to use effective before tbh) and i think i cracked it. i was actually going more for the style used by knife party in their remix of porter robinson's unison, but the bassline i created is still pretty similar to a lot of vocally growls used by kill the noise. Soundcloud the basic technique i used to create the sound was this: one malstrom with the "throat" oscillator, vocoded by a second malstrom with a multi-saw (sine-shaped, comb filtered and ring-modded) and both signals run through to the mixer twice, panned left and right with filter freqs etc. changed slightly. added some EQ to the entire signal chain, compressed it, and voila. tell me what you think :D

For #1, I've been using massive with ohmicide and a saturator.
For #2, I've been speaking the words "talk to me" through a mic, through abletons vocoder with massive modulating it.

I've tried to learn FM8 multiple times, but I can't seem to get it. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here?
I'm not trying to sound like a dick, but if you're concerned because you can't seem to get a full grasp on FM8 in a matter of hours or a couple of attempts, then you probably don't have the work ethic to get anything sounding like that. Sound design like this does not happen over night man. There is no preset for these twisting type reeses and vocal growls. It's all about subtle (and not so subtle) effects and a crap ton of modulation. For the first sound, he very well could be using the "throat" or "tibetan monks" graintable in Malstrom. But take some time to learn FM8. Read the manual. Read the manual more than once. But FM8 is one of the best synths out there at the moment, and I have made some really nice reeses and other sounds straight out of the box with it.
