am i the only one who does not understand the universal dickriding of this guy? don't get me wrong, i think dude's talented and brings a trademark sound to the game, but i get a bit tired of his epic production style pretty quickly...

Lex Luger is good, but he's hardly original. Waka Flocka blew up last year and now every white guy that hears it thinks he's Eazy-E. The dark 808 sound has been around for years. I still prefer Shawty Redd and Fatboi:
Shawty Redd back in '05:

Fatboi in '05:

Christ that MGK dude is awful. But don't get me wrong is still love Lex Luger:

zaytoven is one of the hottest and probably THE most original within this "trap" style

it seems you've forgotten Don Cannon and Drumma Boy

True dat. Him and Rustie should work together. Check this one. Can't believe it doesn't have more views:

Don Cannon, is okay, never been a huge fan. Drumma Boy of course is an old standby, I was just referencing the previous two because I seem to recall them making beats a few years before Drumma. Avoid his raps though.

love zaytoven, but his beats are TOTALLY different than lex's. also girl unit is just w/e not even the same sort of shit at all
and i think MGK is a decent rapper, he has a nice versatile flow and good punchlines. also he's wearing a drop dead shirt in that video so he gets a lot of points for that.
shawty redd would be killing it right now if he hadn't actually killed somebody. bummer the dude's locked up, was super talented..
seriously tho its not that uncommon for rap producers to make their beats fast as hell. actually most of the producers i know and a lot that i admire (cotti for example, or laidback luke) have said that they usually dont spend much longer than like 3 or 4 hrs on a track, start to finish. i know dilla was well known for making crazy beats in like 15-20 minutes and then just turning his mpc off and erasing them. a lot of the early digital mystikz tunes sound like they were made in a single night. i know skream likes to blow thru tracks..

Because in hip hop they don't have to mix it, or even engineer a lot of it. You can be sloppy fast knowing its going to another studio to get "made sound good". Electronic musicians don't have that luxury. Let's see how long itd take Lex to mix his own sh-t. He'd be starring at FL for a week like everybody else.

not really, it's because they aren't breaking any new ground, they're making rap beats ffs
and it's really not THAT hard to mix down a track, not if you keep it simple.

I'm more into the Clams Casino type beats which are listenable too without a rapper/vocals laced over it, but as someone said you can hardly compare the two.
Luger is good and at 21 he will make a load of money. He's very limited to 'trap' beats though and his stuff all sounds pretty similar. I'm sure when the 'trap' phenomenon passes away from the mainstream he'll be less relevant, but I assume he can still make top beats away from that sub-genre.

usually the producer mixes down the beat he makes, and then another engineer mixes the vocals + the beat, and then the mastering guy masters it

never thought of that, may have to rethink entire theory on hiphop’s production chain if this is true
