Phasing occurs because when activated, the area affected by the eq/filter is slightly delayed due to that region being processed and others not.
Linear phase eq's get round this by delaying all bands equally regardless of whever they are active or not.....hence the latency/cpu hog issue.

one thing i will point out is that the phasing on some eqs is actually nice sounding and part of the sound that the particular(sp) eq is famed for
