I don't work with battery much. Sometimes. But when those vintage sampler modes came out, I was hyped, went into battery, and tried them out and it was subtle to say the least. The 1200 was pretty noticeable, but the mp60 was very subtle. I have used battery for some sound design tasks, and for some tracks, and used those vintage settings on a variety of samples... but in maschine, those modes sound like distortion pedals, like less than subtle! Very well could be that my gain staging in maschine is still crap... and all my samples are way quiet... or maybe my gain staging in battery is jacked, and my samples are too loud? Ha. Whatevs, never mind

the MPC60 emu *is* subtle. to the point where we debated whether or not to release it. so is the original unit, though; the "MPC sound" is way over hyped.

Also, Jeroen Breebart made some very nice plugins. He is famous for his work being used in audio standards like MPEG, so the plugins are top quality. Check out Ferox and Timemachine http://www.toneboosters.com
Ferox is no longer free but can be used free with saving disabled I think. Anyway, his plugin bundle sells for only €25 and is worth WAY more than that.

Save your cash and do yourselves a favour. I recorded with a band to tape when I was 15. Then every recording session after was on Tools. I just saw the end of tape as a standard in studio's. I bought the UAD last year and have just mixed 2 albums using the Studer A800 and AMPEX. If you want to get serious about tape you have to get these plugins. I showed them to an engineer who has been recording with the studer and ampex for nearly 30 years and he found it difficult to tell the difference. These plugins are the real deal. Iv'e always wanted the analog warmth that tape brings in fact I actually had a studio booked to output my mixdowns to tape for my last album but I couldn't afford it in the end. My second album that I just finished mixing was done with a Studer as the first plugins to every track then I would use the ampex for a drum bus or to tame a crazy synth or use it as an effect or whatever. Then I bounce my mixdowns out through the AMPEX thus emulating how engineers have dealt with mixdowns since the early 70's. They really do sound incredible.

There must be 20 x tape emulations out there, you just need to demo them and see if they suit your needs, they generally all have a different flavour
and many sound nothing like tape whatsoever.Some work quite nicely in a mix down and some are not so fantastic.

That's not really saving cash though. I wouldn't recommend uad to most people simply because of the huge investment. It's a lot of money, and if you check the poll here most folks are teens-21 and are still learning how to make normal synth sounds and learning how to mix. If someone is more advanced and mastering/mixing albums or already has some releases then it would be a more understandable option. Otherwise I would compare it to recommending someone who's been making music for 12 months to buy a Massive Passive or Barefoot m27s which would be overkill to say the least. There's plenty of great sounding plugins that deliver a good sound for less than a couple of grand. And let's be honest, most people are looking to make "filthy dubstep" anyway, which is comprised of harsh digital sound.

Thanks for clarifying my post wormcode. I agree absolutely. Don't buy this gear until you are ready there are plenty of plugins around that you should learn on first. As for everyone making filthy stuff I Hope you are wrong but this is the first time ove posted on here in about 3 years and alot has changed.

Wormcode has been here in the three years you've been absent, trust his opinion.
