In fairness the Beatles were mostly shit until Rubber Soul. Even then they weren't exactly Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen in the lyrics department. Joanna Newsom is around now and her lyrics are incredible. It also varies from genre to genre. Folk rock tends to have better than average lyrics while metal tends to have worse than average lyrics in my opinion but obviously there's exceptions.
