I personally haven't read the bible and I'm not planning on ever doing so, but I've heard from quite a few people that did read it that there's loads of things written in there that prove that it's total bollocks.
A mate of mine for instance, who has been raised in a very religious way, told me a few of those examples once, I have forgotten most of them but I remember him saying that nowhere in that book is said that the earth is round (why not? he made the fucking thing didn't he?), there was also something like "when the insects come at you on all fours" (how did he forget that he gave insects 6 legs?).
He also said that in the entire book there isn't a single mention of any exotic animals like kangaroos and such. (because it was written here in the west during an era when Australia and other continents weren't discovered yet by the western civilization?)
Also this whole Noah's Ark story is complete bollocks obviously.

That image got me wondering too, now, why Athiests are such ^ssholes themselves.
But it's ok when Christians do it because religious freedom.

So you blindly believe what people tell you?
Job 26:7
"He is stretching out the north over the empty place, Hanging the earth upon nothing;"
Isaiah 40:22
"There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth"
Right away you can see the danger of believing what you "heard" without investigating it for yourself. Your mate was wrong. Bible says the Earth is a circle hanging in space. Which it is. The rest of what you "heard" is just as incorrect.

The Bible was right about the Earth from the start.
Science was wrong about it for a very long time.
Yes. It's more logical to believe what it says.
For instance it says we were created but today's science says we evolved--how long before that's proved to be wrong too... Explain to me why that's illogical.

And you don't believe that religion was created solely for the purpose of controlling large amounts of people?
But as I said, I have never read the bible so of course, I could be wrong.
I just think it's hypocritical to say something like that while you yourself obviously believe what the author of the bible was telling you. And if you go to church, what the preacher is telling you in his speeches. Who says that they are correct?

No, it doesnt.
Isaiah 11:12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in
Ezekiel 7:2 Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land.
Daniel 4:10-11 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.
The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth

holy shit, it's a fucking sphere, not a circle. big difference! you just proved my point. a circle is a two dimensional object, ie, flat. and the fact that it refers to it as a circle in some parts, and having 4 corners in others again just shows how inconsistent and contradictory the whole thing is
vishes wrote:And you don't believe that religion was created solely for the purpose of controlling large amounts of people?
although that's certainly a big part of what it's become, that's not really why there were created (with exceptions like mormonism, scientology, etc. those are and always have been exploitative cults)

Nope, I didn't prove your point. Because your only point is to be right about a book you didn't even read, based on hearsay.

Surely you can't be serious.

The Church isn't correct. I don't go to Church.
The Bible is correct. The Church does not teach what the bible says. It teaches what it wants, with the purpose of controlling people for fininacial gain. Why do you think the Church didn't want people reading the bible and kept it in Latin for so long?

Hate to break it to you, but theres an overwhelming amount of evidence for evolution. You honestly think the creation story in the Bible is "logical"?
And yeah, sometimes science is wrong. But it keeps working to try and get things right and admits when it's wrong. That contrasts sharply to religion which just maintains something is still correct despite mountains of evidence pointing to the contrary.

@Ketamine And never mind the fact that the Bible is misogynist, condones slavery, says being gay is wrong, and says it's OK to rape a woman if you pay her father afterwards and then get married to her. You're right, the Bible is great and has the answers to everything.

"science" isn't "right" or "wrong" lol. i mean even when it's wrong, it's right. because science is a process, not a law or doctrine. When you get something wrong for years, in order to ultimately discover even the beginning of an answer to a question, you've succeeded at science.

Phigure I wasn't talking to you. Your qoute got copied by mistake. Yes, it says Four Courners. It doesn't say its Flat. Its an expression to mean "to the ends of the Earth" which is something even we say today, with full knowledge that a circle has no ends.
If I said
"I was online all day and am sick of it, I reached the End of the Internet" you realize I don't mean it literally. You can't haphazardly apply the rules of language, idiom, and context, when it fits, or disregard normal figures of speech just to make a book you don't agree with overly-literal.

i have read the bible many times (as well as other holy books)
there might be a lack of truth to them in terms of history or science, but there are great stories to learn from with good lessons imo. it's important to understand religions as well as they control so much of our lives whether we ascribe to them or not
Re: An image that got me wondering

that being said, there are also horrible things in many holy books
genocide, i.ncest, homophobia, misogyny, bigamy, etc...
as with all things, some good, some bad
edit: imo
to the OP: the reason people today get offended is because it is honestly what they believe to be true and it often can take a priority on their life, since this life is not much compared to the eternal paradise they seek. This involves faith, and faith is not something easily lost through reasoning imo
