I use Cubase on a 15" monitor and it works fine for me. I use the keyboard shortcuts for the monitor and have two buttons assigned to open / close the selected channel window and vst editor.

I like Ableton, but the one thing I've never liked about it is that the interface feels totally cramped to me. Even with everything else hidden, I feel like I'm constantly battling the interface in the Arrangement View to navigate around. I like to see all of the channels / instruments in my tune laid out without having to scroll, and Ableton seems particularly cramped in this regard. Being able to open and close full-screen windows like in Cubase (and move them around if you have to) feels a lot better to me. Honestly, I would be much more excited about Ableton if I could get used to this (or maybe they will improve it for Ableton 9).

I agree. I recently switched to Ableton and I must say my drops (or any loops for that matter) improved A LOT because of Ableton's workflow in adding sounds and playing arround with automation. But on the other hand, my arrangement skills are much worse because of the bad workflow in the arrangement window.

Nothing beats Cubase arrangement window. But also, nothing beats Ableton's workflow in everything else (well, except mixing).
