I build most of my tracks with 808s and they batter every system ive played them on...Its about building your track around the WEIGHT of them. A kick drum doesn't have to stand out in the mid range to determine the first beat because thats what most people use a kick drum for; nothing more and nothing less.

My sig track uses 808s as the kick and bass (well, they're the same thing for that track..) doesn't sound like pop at all?

I think that the short 808 kicks are fucking don, whatever your trying to make. Those long subby ones have a place in trap, some electronica, and some dance music, but they can't be as widely used. Those short ones though.

I can't write basslines. I just use 808s for the bass presence in my tracks.

like others have stated the goldbaby 808 pack is the shit. on a similar tip I've found the driven drum machine sample pack to be pretty dope.

Layer your 808 with a very punchy kick + a bit of eq = Huge kick

I often put a multiband compressor on the 808 kick and get rid of the high frequents.

Man, if you don't know 808 kicks and how effective they are, you probably don't know the last 30 years of hip-hop and dance music culture. Plus you need some proper speakers.
