wow. if you want to make good dubstep it should sound original. dubstep is not about unique composition usually, or even arrangement to a certain extent. I'd reckon at least half of it is in the sound design, so it's pretty out of line to come up on here asking us to help you duplicate an entire song full of crazy noises. Maybe not out of line, but deffo barking up the wrong tree if you've spent more than 5 minutes here.

Maybe I wasn't regarding the context here, but this mentality is such bullshit. If someone enjoys making songs for fun and uploading them to soundcloud to share (with whoever the fuck wants to listen and enjoy it) and they use 100% presets; it is an ELITIST asshole thing to do, to say they're being completely unoriginal and un-creative.

Should he also code and design the synthesizer he uses to program the patches? How many songs do you like that contain 100% no presets? How would you even know? Can you possibly say with any certainty that you can identify EVERY preset patch in the world?

It's such a prick attitude, and I see it all over this forum and the rest of the internet, not just where OP's are begging for shit or even contradicting themselves. There is nothing wrong with taking a shortcut so long as you are pleased with the end result and achieve what you set out to. For fuck's sake, these entire genre's are almost fundamentally built on sampling percussive and tonal elements from other works. Many would argue that this is completely unoriginal... these are not the positions we should be taking as EDM enthusiasts.

sorry but it is definitely unoriginal, programming your own synth is nowhere near programming your own sounds, stupid.. if you've been using massive for 3 years and still don't know how to get certain sounds out of it your in the wrong business my friend

How do Zeds Dead compress/eq their drums im having serious issues with my drums they sound wayy wonky. any pointers or tips? im not looking to copy them, but they have really clean crisp drums.

Get some good samples to begin with. And I'm sure you have heard that tip a thousand times, but it's key to have good samples. The way Zeds Dead compress/eq their samples wont get a shit sample to sound good. So get diggin'

Crisp maybe. But I wouldn't call them clean at all for the most part. They typically use hip hop snares being that a lot of their dubstep is heavily influenced by hip hop. They use much more gritty samples that tend to not sound so plastique like a lot of other dubstep producers use. I would look into either getting a hiphop drums sample pack or a drum and bass sample pack. Choosing the right sample can be key, as well as some well some well placed distortion. They also tend to use little to almost no reverb on their snares, which helps them stand right in the front of the mix and gives them that solid presence. All in all though, their drums are pretty simple. But look into sampling from old vinyl or getting some hip hop packs (most of which probably come from old soul and funk or jazz tracks).

Off topic but i just saw pulp fiction for the first time. I finally know who the fuck Zed is.

Find good drum samples, Vengeance ones, Danny Byrd ones, Deadmau5 XFer pack, and just layer the drums, I use ATLEAST 2 kicks, and 2-3 snares. One with a crisp hit, high end snare with a crack and then a very dull low end snare.

Dont count me on that. A Clockwork Orange, Donnie Darko, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and all those cult films have been a major part of my upbringing. Pulp Fiction has been one of those movies I've been meaning to watch for too long but i hadn't got around to it. It was on aus tv the other night and I finally saw it. I didn't realise Zeds Dead was a reference to anything until AFTER i saw pulp fiction.

I'm talking about the hipsters in my area, who wear the most ridiculous shit (glasses that don't serve purpose other than make them look "well read") and go on acting like philanthropists and how cultured they are. Gimme a break.

who said anything about clothes? Being a hipster is a mentality - not a costume. By definition you can't be a hipster based on apparel, because the real hipsters would then just separate themselves from those people. it's all about staying ahead of the curve, once something becomes "cool," then it's no longer cool - the next thing is.
