it really grinded (ground?) my gears when I was just putting up a mix of clips I sampled from esquivel and al jolson records. Them shits were circa 1959 and soundcloud said no way, EMI or BMG or whoever still owns the rights. Whoever made copyrights renewable is a dingus of the highest order. They shouldn't extend past 40 years, IMO.

edit: does anyone have experience getting past the filters for samples from big labels? I'm not sure how the algorithms work, so can you apply fx to trick it?

I actually have had this problem before. I did a remix a while back of Adele's "Rolling in the deep," and got it removed for copyright.
They have an automted system that prevents it. Idk if it has to do with the audio or just the title.
My remix sucked anyways so it doesn't really matter.

You're right, Led Zeppelin I-IV should really be public domain.

This is a sort of sub question...

How are people still uploading mixes on soundcloud?

I get a copyright claim every time.

its not a big deal, but im curious.

This.

If you own the space your music is hosted on then you can set your own terms & conditions. Soundcloud are just covering their arses to stop their platform from being misused and ultimately removed.

exactly this.

soundcloud is a great service, the best of its type IMO and if they need to take down a few bait remixes to keep their jobs then so be it.

might be because of the previous strike against your account or its just the choice of music in your mixes.

to who? labels and most producers and djs worth a damn communicate via email or services besides soundcloud
if you're just looking for x amount of listens or x amount of random followers then soundcloud is great
otherwise you should be using wayyy more avenues of approach

Ok to be fair I can agree that extending them through the life of the artist. But there has to be some kind of sanity and balance. I don't care if you're George fucking Gershwin nobody should be getting royalties 80 years after a song was written! IMHO...

After a bit of reading copyright expires 95 years posthumously in US and 70 years in the EU. So the last of The gershwins work enters the public domain in 2032! According to the article I read
