I would like to think i'm brown on my way to black.I can buy a tool now and learn it pretty quick with minimal use of manuals tutorials......
I would say my music theory needs refining even though for self taught i think my theory isn't to bad.
If it's purely on the production side of things i would definitely say i was brown without trying to sound big headed.

It takes at least 10k hours to be considered an "expert" at something.

I would love to know how many hours I've spent in a DAW.

Besides that, I don't think anybody is able to honestly classify themselves in the way you've provided.

i tried to work it out- ive done 335 projects in reason (i save every single session). Then, even at a generous 6 hours a session (i often get fed up quickly with a lot of them, thats still only 2010 hours

and tbh i'd ;ike to think of myself above the second cat :corndance:

i think the hours to skills is a bit flawed

I don't think that you can know everything in music or life in general. I think if you could, it would be a bit shit tbh.

Black does not mean you're a master though. It means that you have knowledge of the techniques. It's from there that you can really start to learn how to use them.

Hours are not only those spent in the DAW, but analysing other music, discussing it on this forum, thinking about it etc.
Today wrote:OP is so modest. Black belt musician, huh. Post vids on your chosen instrument. if they rival Jimmy Smith's organ playing, you win.
I didn't say I was a black belt intrumentalist in particular. I learned to read music about twelve years ago, and I have a qualification.

The black belt in BJJ is harder to achieve than in other systems. This is considered purple in BJJ. It is true that there are dan levels, and not all black belts are equel.
I'm a brown belt in BJJ though
:D Opposite of me. :P

what is "a qualification?"

i'm wary of anyone who declares themselves a "black belt musician." To me that means people like Django Reindhart, and no less.
I aced music theory 12 years ago too, so i know that amounts to jack shit in terms of musicianship.

That's like saying only world champions are black belts.

Acing music theory means a lot for your musical intelligence.

I completed a Certificate IV in Music out of highschool.

musical intelligence ≠ musicianship

actually for anything, intelligence ≠ prowess or ability

intelligence is the ability to learn
Musicianship is the ability to execute.
