But do you guys really care about the tempo it sits in? Are you thinking that it would be better +10bpm when you are listening?

Surprised more people arent going crazy for this guy

No see, that's what I mean. Tempos around 130 are mostly associated with house, UK funky and those other sounds while Wen clearly has more in common with dubstep than alot of the stuff that's getting produced these days.

A little

Tempo makes a huge different in dance music, where everything is beat oriented

And from a DJ's perspective....well yeah

One can DEFINITELY tell the difference if its more then 5 or so BPM

i don't mean dj's sonika, I mean club goers. Of course we can tell the difference, we have been listening for it for years. when I was a hip hop/funk/soul dj I labeled the bpms of all of my records and in doing so, gained a really good ear for bpms...
but my point was that, in the dance, if a song is good its good. no one cares what bpm it is. in my opinion tempo cults are just as bad as genre cults and just as limiting.

songs bellow 140 give the beat room to breath and move, just look at dj abstracts touch, which sits closer to 130 than 140

dj's want songs to all be the same tempo so they don't have to work, but fuck that. there's a whole spectrum of sounds and speeds out there, figure out how to mix em well!

Fair but even from a casual listeners perspective, it completely influences the tune. In my DAW, when I slow down/speed up one of the tracks I'm working on only by a little bit, the track takes on entirely different dimensions, sometimes desirable and sometimes not.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but it seems to me that BPM is a large part of a track's identity, from anyone's perspective

And I think if a DJ used all the same BPM it would be boring as fuck

Good DJs change the tempo artfully throughout their set

right, but you already had an idea of how the tune should sound. if you showed both versions to people who have not heard it before, results would vary i am sure. All i am saying is its ridiculous to hear a good tune at 130 and say "i wish this stuff was at 140" IMHO. good music = good music, get off of 140's dick :6:

Mate I will be riding 140's dick for a looong time

I think we're arguing roughly the same point, just in different terms ;) point is, a track's tempo makes a difference to the vibe of the entire track

Imagine if Loefah's Goat Stare or Horror Show was 170?

what would these tunes sped up to 140 achieve - a little more urgency maybe, but maybe that's just not how he wants them to sound. here you get something a bit fuller and a bit subtler.
Imagine if Loefah's Goat Stare or Horror Show was 170?
pretty extreme as an example. it would be a different track. no one listens to goat stare and says "man this is good, but it would be better if it were 170" - they go and listen to some dnb :|

here we're talking a few bpm. the difference is noticeable but it's not huge - seems like a bit of a quibble to have a real problem with the tempo. if you're saying you like the sound but you're not quiiite feeling the vibe, fair enough. but you get the sense, somewhat, that people want 140 for the sake of having 140... there is so much going on at that tempo i think this is a bit of a breath of fresh air tbh

Dfd I think you're missing the object of my post a little

I wasn't saying at all that I have a problem with any one tempo - that would be fucking ridiculous

I was merely trying to say that a tempo defines a tune. I wasn't suggesting that I would wish any tune to be a different tempo, I'm just contesting the idea that tempo doesn't matter

Fractal I see your point, and originally I didn't really consider, or think about it like that. But I suppose I still side with Sonika a bit more on this. Fractal, you're definitely right, good music is good music, regardless of the tempo. However I think it's a psychological thing, for me at least. I feel like certain tunes would mean a lot more to me, or be much more unique to my ears if they were at 140 opposed to say, 130. It's because, a lot of 130 stuff is really experimental, and unusual, so it's nothing new there. But if that same vibe, sound, and creativity was brought up to 140, psychologically, the tune would grasp my attention much more. Does that make sense? This is just my personal mental connection to 140 so I'm obviously not speaking for anybody else.

i'm not really disagreeing with that. my point is basically that music is not made to order. the music is at that tempo for a reason, and really asking for it to be at a different tempo is asking for different music...
