Yes - in my opinion it is sad to want to produce because you want to sound like anything else out there.

If it is already out there - why does the world need it again? I fully admit I am a cranky, old asshole... but the only people that tend to interest me (in terms of wanting to listen or even buy their music) are people who have their own voice ... and get in the game because they have something to say.

That isn't to say it is bad to have influences... but if you are looking for samples so that you can sound like someone else, all I see is another clone ... and as if that isn't bad enough, a clone who has to cheat off of someone's homework to get their watered down sound.

music doesn't work that way. music is always heavily indebted to music that comes before it, and innovation results naturally from people recontexualizing, combining and subtly twisting old forms

I think what makes it more appealing to me now is a lot of the instrumental 'trapstyle' type stuff. We got rid of the terrible rappers and added a new element with all those remixes of popular house songs and what not. When I used to think of trap I first though of Young Jeezy and the down south collective, and while the beats were nice the rapping killed it. Now stuff like this I can get behind, it's just fun

Yeah, much like there is nothing new about dubstep either. But trap's booming now, which was my point. Been hearing trap tunes all the recent EDM-shows I've gone too. Always fun to see the crowds reaction at the drop when there's no growl basses and all the rager kids go WTF.

Edit: By the way man, it seems like you're really quick to write off everyones posts each time I see you on here. I get that you're old and legit and all but you're underestimating a lot of us here. We're not all brosteppers y'know, no need for the condescending man.

I agree and shit, but make an exception for DJ Wanka. His new collab with Burial pretty much cemented his place in music history.

Unfortunately, it seems you only see my cranky posts - sure, there are a fair number of them, but I also am very supportive... both in sharing knowledge and by playing a lot of unsigned cats on my Sub.FM show. In fact, I even once dedicated a whole show to the DSF Production forum by having 3 guest mixes from DSF posters...and playing DSF tracks in between the mixes.

I understand everyone starts off somewhere - and I have no problem with the fact that people just starting out don't really know what they are doing. What I don't have time for are the same kind of posts day in and day out when a simple click of the Search function on this site, or a 2 minute Google search would turn up all the info they are looking for. It's great when people get inspired by a sound that is new to them - but if they are looking for the same sounds as it has already been done, it will just get stagnant and watered down. Instead - for instance, try making a Trap track with marching band samples...use those wicked snares and bass drum sound for the beat, maybe a whistle or two as well. Use a tuba and trombone sample set for the bassline... You can use the same beat patterns that are typical for Trap, but try experimenting with different sounds.

The Trap sound has been around for a long minute - nothing wrong with wanting to have a go - just find something new to inject into it is all I am trying to say.

That's true, I guess we all have those days and a lot of the stuff on here is utter shit. And I know you're doing a lot of great work on Sub.FM, which is obviously appreciated. Didn't mean to come off as a whiny bitch, haha.

Also, don't much care for trap either. It's cool for the odd track to mix it up a bit but I wouldn't really sit and listen to it.

i keep waiting to hear a trap tune that doesn't sound like a passed-over dirty-south instrumental. So far the ones that seem OK to me sound like a 2009-ish purple dubstep tune w/ the melody.
