Oh, this line of argument again?

First and foremost, no forum and no forumite has a monopoly on the use of the word "dubstep." It's as simple as that. How that's not patently obvious to everyone here is beyond me, but it's one indicator (of several) of a pervasive pretentiousness ... if not about "the dubstep scene," certainly about this particular forum.

It's also a feather in the cap for meme theory; cannibalization of a genre which is overpopulated and overgrown. Though on that note, I'll be interested to see where the "dubstep elitists" take things. There's definitely a broad spectrum of that which is called "dubstep" ... Skrillex and his ilk are on one and, and on the other, you have the light, linen-scented tunes that sound like the kind of thing you hear wafting through the storefront door if you walk past a ladies' fashion shop. If I had to let one go for good, it'd be the latter.

I say that, but I want to be clear - I'm not saying it as a fan of Skrillex. I'm also not saying it as a fan of the idea that Skrillex isn't dubstep.* I'm saying it as a fan of the idea that a person can do something creative and then have the courage to share it with the world in an environment where that work is treated with due respect, not dismissed on account of some superficial label. Such dismissal is no less than bargain-bin bigotry, and everyone here should be excoriating this "JensMadsen" for precisely that reason. I hope that neonmansion isn't so put off by this that he stops posting his work, and I sincerely wish that the people of this forum were more interested in the sharing of music and less interested in protecting some pie-in-the-sky ideal of a word nobody can really even define.

*Note: one of the more prominent arguments I have seen against calling Skrillex's work "dubstep" has to do with the fact that he's never really used the term to describe his work. An interesting note - one of the most, if not THE most, sackridden artists on this forum is Burial. Rightly so - Burial's great. But he also has other terms he prefers for his work (I think "two-step" is it). So ... just a bit of hypocrisy there on the part of Skrillex's detractors.

damn. I'm actually surprised that a lot of ppl came to my defense. I think that my post wasn't dubstep unrelated. aLthough its not a dubstep tune it is half time.. realies on synths and/or repeating rhythmic themes over a beat around 140 bpm. Not going to lie it did get a little bit "gayed out" at 1:28 but this is my first remix. I will definitely post my newer material as it comes up and hopefully I can at the very least get "constructive" criticism.

BTW. Whether or not skrillex is categorized as a "dubstep artist" is different from whether or not he does in FACT make a large amount of dubstep. Songs like Ruffneck bass are CLEARLY dubstep. Maybe not according to some peoples myopic guidelines but, music snob or no, he has certainly produced a lot of dubstep.

But the fact and the matter is that this remix actually takes the original even further away from dubstep. In my mind the original is one of the skrillex tunes which could maybe be classified as hard dubstep as it reminds me a lot of some of the harder Skream stuff from the last two years or so, just not as well made.

And trap is not dubstep, trap is trap or rather - trap is pretty much just dirty south'ish hip hop instrumentals at 140 or around that - other than maybe the tempo and the focus on the bass it doesn't share a lot. That being said great trap is being made out there.

Keep it in the dub section next time than mate - and give it another subject - that headline is clearly just to get views on youtube.

I don't care if he's talking to Oliver Dene fxcking Jones, everybody here has a right to defend himself, and nobody here is in a position to say "I am better than you."

Why are you defending this guy JensMadsen? Serious question.

Maybe you could answer a question for me then. Why is it that European white kids feel the need to dress up like urban American black kids?

I mean, here stateside we have suburban white kids who feel like if they dress a certain way, walk a certain way, talk a certain way ... they'll be taken for something they're not: an urban gang banger. Most don't know where these styles come from or what they mean, they just associate them with "cool" ... but a lot of that has to do with race relations, and where I am in the states (I go between KC MO and NOLA) that's 300 years of history, 300 years worth of mostly mistakes to undo.

But that's white kids in America. What's your excuse in Europe? Obviously the American trends are to be imitated, but frankly "because the yanks do it" seems like a ridiculous line of (non-)thinking. Kind of like what you'd expect from a bored, sheltered suburban adolescent.

So I have to imagine there's a higher line of reasoning and that's what I'm asking for. So what gives?

I didn't realize that a t-shirt and hat was a look owned by 'urban American Black kids'.

You really didn't realize that a flat-brimmed over-sized baseball cap with the stickers conspicuously left in place was a look ... I didn't say "owned" but I'm already done expecting you to take the question seriously, but fine - "owned" ... by urban American black kids?

It's alright. I'm pretty sure you've either ignored or completely failed to understand everything I've typed in this thread.

Do you have any idea just how xenophobic you purists are?
