Paulie's old school

Christopher's new school

everyone had their problems with Christopher, but Paulie is a wise-cracker and he was always on Chris' back, which riled up Chris' ego and his feelings of inadequacy from his mother's alcoholism and his relationship with tony and tony b when they were younger

chris was just a troubled guy and tony knew it and let him off so much, paulie is so simple its untrue, when chris had to tribute to paulie problems began too because chris had wanted for so long to be made, when he gets it he's suddenly the patsy and his ego cant handle it, he thought being made meant respect from his peers which he craved but all he got was abuse from paulie lol

Yeah true, it did look a lot like bullying at times but i meant was there a specific time or event that upped the beef between them? Or did you mean that was when he was made.
Like when those two stockbroker wannabes were pushed around by Furio and lost some of their cut n the safe job which resulted in them shooting Chris? Ad IMO when that happened, Richie P said nothing to look like he wanted them to do that.

I think Chris and Paulie started to have friction when Chris was made. After that, the relationship turned from mentor/mentee to boss/employee, which fucks things up. Plus, Paulie was resentful that Chris got made at such a young age, and a large part of that was only due to his relationship to Tony whereas Paulie had to really earn it.

Quite simply one of the best television shows ever. Silvio is THAT guy for me tbh.

Thought Tony's mum was played brilliantly as well.

The thing about the show that was so incredible too, is that Nancy Marchand (who played Livia) died during the course of the show, so the fact that in dream sequences we never see her again (like we do with Big Pussy, Tony B, etc) makes the character's ghost so much eerier.

ye she had cancer when they started filming the first series and all th way through, they all knew it was coming, but cast her anyway and makes the depression and morbid expressions of waiting for death more poignant

So many things to talk about with this show. Just finished it for the first time myself.

On the Paulie/Chrissy thing, it's gradual, but I'd probably go with Chris getting made too. Paulie was there with Johnny and watched his son, Tony, eventually usurp him. Chris is (for the most part of the show) like Tony's kid and Paulie is probably expecting the same thing. Not that I thing Paulie was clawing to be boss, he just liked to keep Chris in his place.

Making my way through that 'Master of Sopranos' essay too. The ending was surreal -> frustrating -> heart-breaking -> fantastic, in roughly that order. The more you think, the more fitting it seems to be. Can't praise this highly enough.

I love Breaking Bad, but yeah, it just doesn't compare in terms of the characters. Once someone is gone I tend not to think about them in Breaking Bad. But right now I feel like I want to console Tony's family.

Now, The Wire or Boardwalk?

Also I've got to ask, and it must have been mentioned in a million other places. What the f**k is going on with the music? It's f**king terrible. 99% of the episodes end with a ludicrously shit piece of music and it just seemed so strange when everything else is done so perfectly. Yeah music is subjective etc. etc. but I can't be the only one? It eventually sort of added to the charm, but they must have had someone seeking out weird, crap songs to put at the end.

I'm fairly sure the last couple of episodes (well, at least the one where Tony goes to visit her) she's in, the actress had already died so they had to use computer trickery and older footage.

I think the music fits like a glove. In many cases it reflects the gaudy tastes of the Sopranos/modern Mafia/chav Italian-Americans. In others, again imo, it reflects the sociopathic nature of Tony (or other Mafia members/killers) - Crimes of the most heinous nature are committed and then they can just go home and kiss their kids on the cheek and be jovial.

You should watch The Wire next. I need to watch Deadwood. I read somewhere that, as they debuted in this order on HBO, the shows were a trilogy about America...

Deadwood - the formation of America and rise to prominence
The Sopranos - Ruling / descent of American empire
The Wire - Complete destruction of all that "we" built

the evidently chicken town montage was sooo fitting yet not at the same time.

David Chase picked all the music himself

also Sil used to be Bruce Springsteens guitarist in the E Street Band and Chase picked him to play that role based purely off that, Silvio Dante had never even acted before, so Chase's love of US pop-rock is kind of obvious

i think the music is perfect tbh, that episode where Carmela and Furio get it on in old school italian dancing mode is amazing, Spaccanapoli - Vesuvio is a brilliant track, introduced to me by, the Soprano's so yeh

Fair enough. That is the track that haunts me more than anything from the program. Possibly the only thing outside all the puking (seriously, every other episode had someone throwing up) that would ever make me turn it off.

I watched up until about halfway through season 4 of The Sopranos then lost interest and never went back to it.
