Pre-1980s shouldn't count, maybe even pre-90s. The music world was a totally different place at the time with different definitions of 'underground' and 'mainstream'. From recent years probably garage though. Hip-hop was hit and miss. Mainstream rock has always been overwhelmingly shhitay.

I'd say that mainstream blues was probably the most influential of all genres that went mainstream (not necessarily the best though)
Cream
The Rolling Stones
Hendrix
etc.
In terms of non-electronic music possibly, but can't knock Disco and the effect that had on dance music from then on (House music and basically everything that came from that, etc.)

And look what Bad Company became... Fresh (one of the worst culprits for mainstream crap), D-Bridge (doing his thing), and Maldini and Vegas still releasing stuff as Bad Company (fuck knows what it is as it's so far and between)

Watch it, or pkay will get his knickers in a twist and rant at you about how they've been making some of the biggest tunes in dnb in the last ten years or something...
But yeah, UKG is pretty much it.

Is mainstream dubstep the worst of the genres?

Most mainstream EDM regardless of sub genre is utter garbage.

Good point.
Actually, what people consider mainstream grime might actually match dubstep for its shitness compared to the underground.

When we talk about mainstream jazz, who are we talking about? Struggling to think.
