Edit: I was talking about 6 string tuning and I'm not speaking specifically of Meshuggah. From my 12+ years experience playing in metal bands 6 string guitars are still very popular.

On a 7 string guitar there would be another lower string. Frequently dropped tuned for a 1 finger power chord. That 7th string sounds like mud if you ask me.
Meshuggah tune to F standard on a seven string, Theres no difference tuning to B on a six string or just playing a 7 in standard, its gonna sound like mud if you have a shit amp/cab/pickups

I've made realistic heavy guitar sounds with RealStrat and Guitar Rig or Hardcore (FL Studio) as the amp. Massive can make some pretty heavy stuff, obviously, that's why everyone uses it, but it's not impossible to emulate a guitar.

Iirc it's mostly 8 string with tuned to drop G#. I know the major exception being Bleed which was in B although using an 8 string.
