If your DAW has the capability to clone audio fast; its just a matter of colouring then changing ADSR/PItch/Velocity of the new hit.
I find midi drums are MUCH more fiddly than raw audio.

heh, ya I feel like I have one hand tied behind my back trying to do beats in anything else. Too much mouse, not enough keyboard lol.
I had used a few programs that had step sequencers with on/off buttons like the one in fruity loops and a piano roll before I really got into production, but I learned most of what I know with Renoise and Audacity, so that's what make sense to me. Been using Renoise for 4 years.
