More than likely the biggest reason is because Cd's are much cheaper.
So what do turndables even do besides scratching?

I'd like to get into DJing, and they have display equipment at my local music store. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but I noticed that all turntables seem to do is scratch and rewind stuff. Neither of which I've heard in various live DJ lets I like. What do they do that I couldn't do with faders and buttons?

Knowing how to spin is an art form in its own. CDjs are the next evolution. Mostly because a stack of CDs weighs a lot less then a crate of vinyl.
cdjs are so much less fun that vinyl. I don't see how that it's evolution. it's purely convenience. being lighter isn't progressing djing it's just making it easier for people like you who can't be arsed to carry things.
I agree 100% that CDs are boring compaired to vinyl. All I'm trying to say is, the 1200's are out of production and most clubs (that I've been too) wont let you bring those big tables and crates of vinyl. Cdjs are more compact and convenient.
I knew I should have chosen my words more carefully as to not upset the über tr00 djs on the dubstep forum.

Pitch tracks up or down, usually by a maximum of 10% (+ or -)

If the promoter doesn't accept vinyl he should check himself before I wreck his face.
He will need tr00 uber djs to get some proper music going.

Makes the music played on them a lot more real! Every tune is fake until a dub is cut of it

I thought the "What are CDJs For" post was bad. I can't wait to see, "Why even listen to music when you can pretend to" thread.

No it's not that I'm being an uber troo dj or whatever the fuck you are calling it it's just you described it as being evolution which honestly all I see it is a simple matter of convenience which in my eyes is not an evolution in regards to the art of djing. I use cdjs all the time. There's tunes I'm sent, non-vinyl releases and free downloads that I play all the time not to mention I simply can't afford every single thing I want on vinyl these days. Also while I still honestly know of very few nights of any quality that don't have turntables yeah they are sometimes fucked or set up badly so yeah playing cds can be preferable then.
But yeah to restate my point: I play CDs but they really only have convenience going for them.
