. dynamic mics are way more convenient though because you dont need the phantom power as project EX said.

Well OP mentioned percussion, including bongos, so I'd use a SM57 if any punch is wanted on it. A condenser would be alright for mixing it more in the background.
I also remembered the brightness and clarity of the '57 can be improved by bypassing the internal transformer. Simple modification that could be done by a decent engineer (or yourself if you're feeling adventurous).
