i jump between akg k171 mkII's and KRK KNS 8400's.

both are super affordable closed back studio reference headphones and theyre both super affordable.
the KRK's are better though.

Nobody's said Audio Technica M50s yet which is a common recommendation. They're a lot of people's first foray into audiophile tier headphones. They're also foldable and really flexible so they're ideal for DJing. You can get a coiled cable version which would probably be better for DJing as well. I also prefer it for portable uses instead of a straight cable since the M50s are my iPod headphones for on the go. If I tried to bring my Sennheisers somewhere I'd have to coil the cable for ages to get it in my pocket.

The sound signature is a bit too rock n roll or hyped to be considered clinically flat, but you want a bit of bass boost on headphones to compensate for small driver size. Ideally I prefer more delicate high end like that of the open back Senns, but a lot of people prefer the slightly hyped high end because it sounds more detailed to them. I'd say they're on the AKG side of the AKG <--> Sennheiser continuum. They're a bit like the headphone version of the NS10. Having a nice DAC and headphone amp might help take a bit of the graininess out of the high end as well. Ultimately for production, you're going to have to learn the sound signature of your monitoring chain and compensate for it. Keep in mind you don't want to really acclimatize yourself to shitty headphones and then be back to square one mixing-wise when you upgrade.

go for closed back ones like the 990 so you don't bug your classmates.
990 are open backed.
Either 770 for closed back or 880 for semi-open.

I don't know if he actually endorses the Audio Technicas. I've seen pictures of him using them. His own brand of headphones however, are just an income source. It's the technological version of:

This thread is long dead, but from personal experience I would actually go
for open or at least semi open for mixing.

I have the low impedance 770's. They lack quite a bit of mid.
Still great headphones and you can get used to that response, but next time around I would go for 990 or atm50's.

Not for DJing or mobile listening though. But yeah my open Senns sound way more natural. Not having sound immediately bounce back into your ear makes a big difference.

It'd be a bit stupid of him to endorse the M50s when he's trying to hawk his own headphones. It's all grind though, so if it makes him more money and doesn't cut into Beats sales then I could see him doing it I guess.

marketing in futuremusic magazine vs. marketing in the latest issue of dolly magazine.
^ two very different things.

its like how you dont see ads for mercedes' and bmw's outside of the advertising hours of sunday business shows and the financial sector of the sunday paper.

mercedes wont slap an ad on tv during 6pm primetime viewing or put an ad out in pc gamer magazine.
because thats not their target audience, thats where you'll be seeing hyundai stock runout deals and mcdonalds 'hunger-buster' ads..

no one in the sound industry would buy a set of beats (we're not idiots) and so they dont advertise them/give us the chance to scoff at them, because the marketers know thats exactly what we'll do.

still though, i think its funny. he must be getting paid a ton.

that motherfucker be stacking paper to the ceiling.
