Seriously - this is where, you know, listening to records should be at least MARGINALLY important to someone wanting to make records. It would be like me saying "I want to make hip hop" and then use a Viennese waltz as an example.

Don't get me wrong - ALL genres can spread wide (stylewise)... but you have to look and know how to dig. I have a prog Disco record from the 70's that has an electronic hook that actually sounds like early Autechre.. but you know, 30 years before. Listening to pre-made, diluted spooj packs aren't going to give you that.

If you want to make music (spoiler) - it helps to actually be a fan of music and be the type of person that actually actively seeks and looks for it, rather than just lap up any & everything that is put in front of your face.

I get it, it's a sound design element and tbh, you don't have to love disco to love disco influenced music. But what I tend to sample is mostly black metal, something I have a history with. It's not even conscious, it just happens. I look everywhere for samples, but it's the black metal ones that end up inspiring me.

I don't see why you guys are making such a big deal about it, i'm asking so i CAN go look for myself, and I have been listening to the genre here recently.. it's not like i was saying that whole example = disco, but that just a few of the elements are disco influenced. like some of the hit sounds and the chops used for hooks, I just wanted to see if theres a certain type of disco that generally has those kinds of elements to help me narrow my search...

That's exactly the point. Don't narrow your search. Widen it. Spend some time actually looking into it.

Then lesson learned - and trust me, the world will be a brighter and more exciting place!

And that is not meant to sound patronizing in the slightest - Even the crustiest of Vets wouldn't still be in the game, unless they still got giddy as a schoolgirl when listening to an unexpected break of gold... or an untouched string sample... or accidentally left their field recorder on & captured a beautiful moment in nature... or (hopefully) - a song that is of absolutely no 'sample-worth', yet still makes you smile cos it is a dope song and it is WAY out of your comfort zone.

Anyone can be a one-hit wonder... (cos one-hit wonders are random). But musicians who last - are people who love music and want to nothing but listen to music (all types of music) and find new things about music (whether it be sampling or teaching or whatever) to keep music such a new & precious commodity. And the reason why is - Hey, not everyone makes a glorious career out of music... but even if you make half of one, or even fail... at least you got to spend some time loving listening to music, writing music & performing music.


So yeah, um...
1) love Music
2) stop painting by numbers
3) remember how lucky you are that you are so moved by music that you HAVE to make music of your own.
