FM8 is VERY capable, and I've played with many FM synths. I do all my work in FM8 - what're you having trouble with?

I recommend pouring over the manual like your life depends on it - lock yourself in your studio for two straight days, working in "expert" mode, and you'll get it - but i'm down to share whatever I've learned - not that I claim to know everything.

is it the basics of FM that throw you off, or the process of applying different modulators to various carriers? god I could probably write a Thesis on this shit by now. hit me up if you have any questions.

It is simple enough really, carrier frequency is modulated by modulator slope. :corndance:

Head over to the official FM8 thread. If you think one VST is better than another, EVER, you are an incompetent bastard. There are no better VSTs.
azuk wrote: I'm a Sytrus user, and in what way if FM8 better than Sytrus?
There is simply programs that have different strong points. Sytrus is awesome, but its more of a "zomboy" white noise, feedback and phasing, sourced engine. Whereas FM8 is more of a vowel inducing engine, and has more modulation spread.
Sytrus is very smooth and using it grants a gnarly, consistent sound because it seems to have 0 to 100% modulation features.
FM8 Has like 0-10 % modulation feature. Which means instead of slowly going down and up with the mouse, it skips by increments of 10 ( i don't really know the exact number.)
So this gives the sound a really gritty, ear blistering feel. Its not smooth at all and getting smooth growls isn't so easy, but it makes for really powerful "stuttery" growls, or really crunchy sounds.

The first sound in the drop, sounds sorta like a lion, its really crunchy and beastly. (Check 1:29)
This is FM8's main demonstration of sound.

This one starts at 1:50 and continues on further into the song. Its the same concept, using i'm assuming, the same engine. Which is FM8.

The rest of Zomboys stuff can easily be created with massive, FM8, or sytrus, but im assuming it is sytrus.
It has that tone to it.

I was totally joking about Sytrus vs. FM8, they are both very capable. I just happen to prefer Sytrus.

The growl in that zomboy tune is sampled, but comes from fm8 yeah. Kind of a let down when I found out, thought he was past sampling basses..
