Yea...I'm kinda surprised your computer doesn't support ASIO4ALL ... how have you come to that conclusion? What audio driver are you running it on?

Yeah. There are serious misconceptions about MIDI keyboards. I've had multiple people tell me "you can't really use Ableton without a MIDI keyboard". I didn't have a MIDI keyboard for most of my production career and didn't even get one until a few months ago. And to be honest I don't really use it as much as I thought I would. I tend to just draw notes in rather than record them.
Thats pretty much where im at also. Ive even set my ipad up as a keyboard, but id still rather draw notes. A keyboard can be really helpful for just smashing keys and seing what sounds right, but aside from that i dont really see too many people recording live into there daws with them.

One good technique that I like to use the keyboard for is getting a natural variance in velocity for a piano melody or for hi hats or something like that.

FWIW, I use Maschine to sketch out melodies and bass, then I'll move stuff around with the mouse. It is nice for getting velocities and a more natural feel to things. Obviously doing drums with it as well ;p

Don't try man make anything when it comes to music mate, don't force yourself into a box or gerne. There's no point, it will only limit your creativity and imagination. Get some Coffee, sit at the D.A.W. off your choice and just write what you're feeling at that specific moment in time. Don't think about it, just create.
I know you're still pretty new to music production so you want to try and re-make your favorite tracks and sounds. Thats cool man because you will begin to learn you're tools and how to create that sound you're looking for. But in the long run, be yourself.
