i'm now in love with the new drums that i create. and everything that follows. and my project is also lot cleaner.
cheers!
Right on man. I used to have all kinds of problems with over processing and cluttering, mudding up my mixes, until I started going down this path. I don't always limit myself like this, but I keep things pretty simple these days and work with audio as much as possible.

Fuck you guys, I'm gonna start a maximal setup production challenge.

You are allowed a three-room modular synth, pure data on three high power dekstops, max4live on three high power desktops, a live symphony orchestra, a session band, a top of the line recording studio, three assistant engineers and a in-house vinyl cutting ME.
GO!

Anyway, FLP file is as follows;
http://www.sendspace.com/file/5cij7f
With a screenshot as is;
Setup Channels
1) FPC
2) Slicex
3) TAL Elektro 2 (seemed most apt as an old school emulator style thing)
4) Morphine
5-8 ) Audio clips
All routed through to the mixer with their own channels as listed. For the Sends, I've got TAL-Reverb for that nice plate sound, and FL Delay 2 as it's a very simple no frills delay
All channels on the mixer are set to mono as shown.
I'll grab the file when I get home wub!
That looks like a great template for FL Studio. I bet people will be surprised how far they can take this setup. It's really not even limiting inside a DAW, you just have to put in the effort to resample and make smart decisions about what things to track together.

I had to Google how to set the channels at mono, turning the stereo separator all the way off. Wanted to use Toxic Biohazard instead of Morphine, but as TB is a FM driven engine it seemed a bit out of place and against the spirit of the challenge.

Is there a free DX7 Emulation? I think that'd be fair. Good to know, I've been using the Brainworx free stereowidth tool to mono things!

Not sure...went for the TAL Elektro as it was a close SH101 (?) emulator.

Not that it matters, but I think Tal Bassline is the SH101

Elektro is an updated version of Bassline though IIRC.

What's the rule on combinators ? Cuz if I muck around enough I can get a whole tune on one chaneel

Guess that'd fall under the same criteria as racks in Ableton and patcher in FL Studio...don't abuse them as a way of working around the guidelines really.

Did not know that.

I don't know what a combinator is. Use your own best judgement. Keep it minimal and challenging. Is it like racks in ableton?
OK. Saw your second post. yea, I wouldn't abuse that.

Yea. Basically don't do any of the stuff that makes producing easy lol

That's why I though reason would have it easy lol if I wante I could turn one channel into the while thing. Take a combinator(1 channel) put an audio merger/splitter in it. route 3-4 14 channel line mixers into the merger. Then use as many instruments as I wanted, only issue would be the 1 of each inserts

last question, are samplers considered synths in this case?

try working like in a modest analog studio where you use what you have and that only.
i thought i'd make a list of what a this modest studio could include:
1x8 mono channel mixer (as fragments suggested)
2xparametric eq
2xfilters
1x of each effect (delay, reverb, stereo imager)
2xsamplers
2xsynths
1xcompressor (simple or multiband)
1xmaximiser
2xdistortion units
go nuts!

This competition so close what I always do. Not counting Live's drum rack because it's maybe counts more channels or considered as a drum buss.

Gonna get involved with this when I finish the project I'm working on at the minute. Sounds like a really interesting way of working and I know jack about using hardware so hopefully this could give me some idea about how it all works. Also the idea of working with 'less' sounds very appealing, keeping track of everything I'm using in my current project is starting to make my brain hurt
