I've tried DJing my classmate's parties before, shit doesn't really work. The first time I had really low expectations so I played a bunch of bait electro house like Feed Me and shit, that worked all right I suppose, then I worked in some grime and prog techno and garage towards the end, it still sorta works. Next time, I try my luck with footwork, trap and garage/deep house only, and nobody dances. At some point, one guy even just walked up, pulled the plug and put on fuckin thrift shop off his phone. Wasteman. Anyways, it's a bit pointless for me to even DJ their fuckin parties at this point it seems, they don't give a flying fuck about mixing etc, they just want to hear their favorite tunes in a row. I reckoned Maya Jane Coles, Mercy VIP, RIP Productions etc would be completely danceable to everyone, but norwegian teenagers just fuckin suck I suppose.

Not sure i've heard 'Mala weight' at a house party since about 2009 tbh. Jungle/D&B, and garage has been the main constant since I was young. 'Tasteful' bro was a la mode till about 2011. Now it's house.

I heard top 40 stuff once at a house party. That was an anomaly (and it was in Brighton) but I suppose it depends on the circles you move in. In my experience if your into music then you've probably danced to the above more often than not at a house party. If you're not really a music fan and none of your mates are then i'd imagine top 40 stuff gets bumped out of laptop speakers in the corner of the room.

Once had a party at my house, was having a mix and had just played a bunch of Kode9 and Mala tunes, some guy who I didn't even know (what was he doing in my house?) then walks up to me and goes "this is boring mate, put some dubstep on"

I don't even bother trying to put music on at house parties any more. I remember trying to play dubstep back when it was fairly new, it got turned off after about 10 seconds.

I don't even try playing my music at parties. People in 'merica just don't get it. I wish I lived in London. I have a whole theory that it has to do with the beat. The 2 step garage beat and breakbeats in general (except for hiphop, for some reason) are just not understood by most americans I don't think. We're used to a simple 4 on the floor. That's all we can handle. And people feel uncomfortable when they hear music that they aren't familiar with.

Tbf people don't generally go to a house party to watch someone mix, you might as well just put a playlist on an mp3 player

I didn't really want people to *watch* me mix, I was hoping they'd want to dance and that a good DJ set is the optimal thing to dance to. Was trying real hard too you know. Put on Katy on a mission, TNGHT, Joker, Rustie, Three 6 Mafia etc but no luck.

i dj'd an after party at someones house a few months back and played all the old-ish garage tunes that people my age grew up with. stuff like little bit of luck, flowers, sweet like chocolate, neighbourhood and a few newer tunes from like disclosure.

went down really well but that might have just been the crowd. the tune that went down best was when i finished the set with this:

quite lucky in that a lot of my mates are into decent stuff, thinking about it

if i'm on ipod selectah duties, usually just go for a bit of RnB or disco between usual stuff i'd wana play at parties to keep people that aren't as trainspotter as me dancing lol

^ yeah for real, i've played no end of student end of year balls and stuff and the stuff that always goes down best is early 00's r&b
