By that logic, any EQ would be a graphic EQ because it has a graphical interface. Only headless parametrics would be considered something different.

Don't listen to anybody's rules about EQing. EQing is too much when you get obvious phase issues, or you reduce content in such a way that the mix sounds "empty" or "lacking" without the frequency content you took away to such a drastic extent (or the converse, in the opposite situation). Anybody saying no more than 6db or -6db or boost wide and cut narrow only, they have no idea what they're talking about -- they are literally just repeating what they've heard other people of their skill level (or worse!) repeat. It's an endless cycle of misinformation.

Good rule of thumb to use before you know any better though. If you find yourself making drastic EQ moves, there might be a problem closer to the source you need to solve. Sometimes that's what's called for within the context of the track, but be cautious if you have to do anything too crazy to get where you want. There's probably a more effective method of getting the tone you're looking for.

Sounds good = do it
Doesn't sound good = don't do it

This is it really.

The problem I think a lot of guys have is this:-

Bad monitoring environment + lack of experience = inability to be able to tell what sounds good or not.

Without referencing as well you are just shooting in the dark so it's no surprise you get people asking for these magic answers and numbers that will work for them.

If people spent half as much time investing in their monitors/room and getting to know their system properly than they did seeking out these elusive numbers then there would be much faster progress.

Yeah, I've done so many tracks that I can eq a kick even just on a laptop, because I know generally where the lows should sit in relation to everything else in terms of DB. Once you make a few tracks and understand generally where you like things to be it really isn't hard.

no set definition of "too much EQ" IMO unless you're doing ridiculous high Q boosts or huge cuts. "when it starts to sound bad, then it's too much" should be you're only rule of thumb. like, you might take out half of the spectrum with a low & high pass, but that might not be "too much", whereas a ridiculous, yet thin, 15 dB boost at 750 is obviously too much.

Well, I've been using a 707 kick to layer over my 808 to give it that punch.

I just start getting confused when it comes to EQing the kick. It hits hard around 89-100hz, and to me, on my monitors (KRK5's) it doesn't really hit that hard unless I boost it up at about 90hz about 10db. Then I compensate for it by turning the level down on the kick track. Is this wrong?

I haven't listened to the 5's but my 8s don't even really hit hard so I doubt your 5s are supposed to hit hard.
