PhaserBass wrote:I usually make my basses with Harmor or DX10. Heavily phasered riddim basses are fairly easy with Harmor and the correct fx and eq. With DX10 you can make surprisingly powerful wonky fm basses by twisting knobs and using a harmonic exciter on the low end.
Dude ive been trying to make those riddim basses in your tune below and i cant come close.... Ive been using fm8 but i cant seem to get the right operator and cent settings, plus the correct amount of fx. Ive been struggling for so long to get some stuff like that. :(

Could you post a bit more detail or any tips because it would be much appreciated :Q: .

On another topic, ive decided to make a mega fx audio rack in ableton to cut production time and modulation time down immensely. Not sure how its going to go but im literally going to throw a lot of plugins, mostly stock and others not. Then assigning macros and macros on each other to a control center thing for main things like notches, amp, saturator, etc.

To make different sound within the rack ill just adjust certain setting so like for example a phaser frequency and rate or something like that. Ill spend a couple days on it. Should end up something similar to xy controller. Ill post a thread with a download with any ableton heads out there :W:.

I finished the rack and made a thread about  check it out, surely it would help anyone out in bass design in ableton!

Well I'm not really talented when it comes to fm8 so I can't help you with that plugin. You should get a free phaser vst called Azurite. It sounds great when you're making phaser synths. The synth from the song in my sig was made with Fruity DX10, a harmonic exciter(low end), few equalizers and a reverb.

My phaser synths are usually a basic squarewave, volume envelope and a phaser width envelope + like 3 or 4 azurites on the mixer channel :D depends on the sound you're looking for. A clean and simple bass is usually achievable with just 1 or 2 phasers. IMO these basses need a lot of experimenting and tweaking to get the desired sound so be patient. You'll get there.

What do you mean by phaser width envelope? How do you set up eq's? Sometimes when i cut out certain frequencies i get an ok sound.

Yuup that is the plugin c: Never tried that blue cat chorus. Might be worth testing. :)

Well I can automate my phaser width in a plugin called Harmor. I think it's only for FL unfortunately :/
But anyway the phaser width automation part looks like this. It creates a slight downward sweep to the sound. The phaser is basically not "moving" at all as my phaser speed is at zero. The envelope creates the movement in the sound and that way I can control the outcome better. If the phaser speed wasn't at zero the synth would propably sound random and messy at some points because its hard to estimate the exact rate and sync it to the beat. Azurite has a tempo sync function and that is one of the reasons I like it so much. You'll hear what I'm talking about when you get to the end of this post.

And this is how my eq'ing looks like.

With the first eq (top left) I boost the frequencies I need (in this case low mids and highs). The 2nd, 3rd and 4th eq are used for minor (or major) adjustments.
I made a clip which shows you the sound without FX and with FX.

Hopefully I helped you somehow :)

Thanks a lot man :W: i kinda new what to do with these sort of sound, even about trying to phase it and use squares since there pretty metallic at time.

So after awhile i gave up in fm8 with no good results for a int patch so i went to massive and made a basic patch for a starting point and got a nice sound going. I feel more comfortable in massive and what i like doing since it doesnt have the phaser width env like harmor, i slapped the same env from the master and other mod stuff to pitch cut off with the amount set to something really small like 0.04 and then set the unision up to 10 and add another osc with a square and that got my int patch sounding pretty good in just massive!

Then after that idk what hell i was doing but something click after trial and error with messing around with the blue cats chorus and some pretty creative eqing. I was a/b'ing after i was done with the sound and was shocked how one eq eight changed the sound so much.... Its crazy. Something just feel in place today for me because this is the closest and best patch ive done making these phaser or whatever basses.

It sounds something like the small clip you posted above ^ but it doesnt have that quick attack and harsh blap sound like the one in your signature, but its still great patch ive made :U: If you want i could post the ableton project or massive patch :W:

Lol yea little things make the difference man c: I think you're getting to a proper synth right there (: I recommend listening to Soloman, Subfiltronik, Styn, PADU and such. They make really good riddim tunes and you can find them on soundcloud and youtube. Hope you have fun experimenting with synths (::

drag any sound/sample into edison.

run generator > sine generator.

freq: 50.00hz

volume: 0.888

Enjoy.

i have a really good technique if anyone wants to hear? :D
I don't see why anyone would ever need to make a sub in Edison. Just make it in sytrus lol
open edison.

1.drag a kick into edison
2.edit > insert silence
3.run generator > sine generator
4.freq: 50hz
5.volume: 0.888

trim/put a fade out on the end of the sample, and then voila.

whack your sample on the step sequencer and away you go.

up to you, thats just the basic sine but its got great depth at those settings.. if anyone tries this and wants more info then holla at me.
1. Open Sytrus
2. Select default patch
3. Apply envelope

No need to make things needlessly complex, just takes time away from actually making music.
Exactly this, why make things complicated? Lol bit old post but we

Sick dude! Did you do the same thing inside harmor also or a different synth?

Original Poster - you probably shouldn't use a compressor yet haha. I see the track in your sig is absolutely squashed of all dynamic life.

I used massive. Just a normal square wave. One osc. :)
