sure he's significantly more progressive than his predecessor (the bar is low), but i think all the pope francis praise runs the risk of turning a blind eye to the (numerous) problems with him and the catholic church

like his continued condemnation of the use of condoms/contraception, particularly in places like sub saharan africa where it enables the spread of HIV

or when he spoke about the gender pay gap, "Why is it taken for granted that women should earn less than men? No! They have the same rights," same rights? yet the clergy is still limited to men only? also there really still hasnt been any significant action regarding pedophiles and child abuse in the church

I can see why celibacy is important to the church. It wants complete dedication to a single cause (serving God in this case). I think its a legitimate requirement that isn't beyond the reach of dedicated individuals. The church just needs a better screening process for clergy to catch pedophiles.

As for the other "problems", you gotta remember that we are talking about an organization that has existed for THOUSANDS of years that bases its teachings on materials that are hundreds of years old. It will change at some point (it didn't last this long by avoiding change all together) but it will obviously lag somewhat behind society.

I guess thats maybe my main problem with the church. It references these ancient materials instead of just going on the overall vibe of its core beliefs (kindness, sacrifice, forgiveness etc) which I think are legit.

No and this doesn't make any sense.

They create pedophiles and they need to go down because of it.

Vatican needs to get shut down aswell.

Imo
Catholicism cant exist anymore and it shouldn't either.

What are your views on Islam?

I think it's much easier to excuse Islam. There's economic reasons and political reasons for that sort of concervatism historically. Whereas all of western society has evolved around what is still the same old old catholocism. And then there's the bit where the vatican is used politically as a safety zone. Obviously there's a point in equating that too how some of the Saudis operate but I'm sure you can see how that is more politically than religiously based, meaning that could actually change down the line.

We can't have this sort of feudal shit going down in europe now imo.

Its in spanish but here the pope says that christians cannot reduce their speech to condoms homosexuality and abortion. This is a great thruth, most of the times all the christians are put all their time and efford with this subject when there are more important things going on, in the same way he says he has always tried to talk the less about his opinions on this subjects so people and specially journalist shouldnt be all the time bringing up this topics to get some controversy. He havent gone to africa ti convinve their believers not to use condom like all the past popes
