The amount of news coverage mdma related deaths get is a good sign, it shows how uncommon they are.
They are, but proper labelling and information will reduce the number of deaths. It's not a black/white thing.
Exactly. If we prohibited alcohol tomorrow kids would be dying from unwittingly drinking paint thinner and others would be wasting their money. More information is a good thing for everyone, even the ones who like things some of us don't.

Yeah of course, although in the case of mdma there's like one death in millions not really enough to start shouting down the war on drugs imo.

For more lethal drugs i completely agree.

So do you think the War on Drugs has had positive effects outweighing all these negatives if they're "not really enough" or is this just standard apathy?

Would you be happy to keep MDMA illegal?

No, i think the war on drugs is mostly ridiculous.

I just think that it is not MDMA that should be used as the example for legalisation.

I suppose any press like this is a good thing tho.

Just trying to work out why you're expending effort shouting it down. Any weapon in this fight is useful.

The most 'dangerous' statistic (i.e. the one that's got people removed from Government influence for mentioning) in the modern war of drugs was that MDMA is safer than horse riding. I think if you can demonstrate that the only "excessive" risk arising from MDMA use is due to it being unregulated and unpredictable, then you pretty much blow prohibition out of the water. It's a "caring" policy that actually does harm to the children someone's supposed to be thinking of.

Criminalizing MDMA does more than just directly kill people. It indirectly kills people (criminalizing it creates a black market often run by dangerous gangs) and ruins their lives. It puts college kids wanting to make a little extra money on the side in (the violent) American prison system and may disable them from voting for life or getting an extra job.

Should they face the consequences of their choice if they KNOW what they're doing can put them in jail? Well yeah. There's a bit of personal responsibility. That still doesn't justify the system that is in place anyway. Because it's counterproductive and violates basic human rights.

Furthermore, MDMA shows another failure of the war on drugs: It doesn't stop people from doing drugs, yet costs millions if not billions of taxpayer dollars each year and has all these aforementioned negative consequences, despite the fact that it's still a relatively safe and untoxic drug. So whether it kills or not, MDMA is still a way to get people to think differently about the WOD. And the death of this girl is still a symbol for the pointless death caused by the ignorance caused by the war on drugs.

A friend of mine once did MDMA out in the streets and then hugged a police horse, btw. I think Americans should be allowed the same type of freedom to party like that.

It doesnt really matter if the person I knew had impure and this girl had very pure drugs, the fact is that prohabition has created such a vast inconsistency in drug quality. When liquor was banned I'm sure there was the same problem. My friend took two pills (when he should have only took one) and died. This girl does a half g and dies. Both on their first trip. That responsibility is on them, period, but is it still not a shame?

If all these drugs had labels, you're right, we dont know if things would be different. But what I do know, is that when you encourage real drug education over "just say no", alot of these casualties could be reduced in the future. But again, Government agencies make too much money off of prohabition, so why would they care about these things? To them, these kids that die are just grains of sand on the beach - and I think thats where this mother can legitimately get mad. We all know the war on drugs is a joke/a multi-trillion dollar industry. The only people winning are the government and the drug cartels, while we common people are stuck with all the losses.

Again you should all watch the movie How To Make Money Selling Drugs.
yeah i dont disagree with anything youve said here

will check that film out too

Dude no shit, like, I always walk a huge ass circle around police horses. Call me a pussy, I don't care, but I'm not gonna stand in the way of that hoof when it gets startled and spazzes out. That's no fucking way to go out.

The stupid thing is that politicians are just carrying on a load of bullshit passed on from previous generations. Even Cameron supported a load of decriminalisation and legalisation policy in opposition and everyone but blind idiots know he's had his fair share of the stuff, but the media have their fingers in the prohibition pie so everyone is kept ignorant of the facts.

All it would take is one UN report and then all the politicians could feign helplessness. Everyone would chill out after that because they'd realise how good it is that way...

My uncle got kicked in the face by a horse, it didn't do him any favors. It was his own horse actually.
Got me thinking about the times I had to clean the hooves of donkeys at a petting zoo
Police horses are trained to be chill though. They have two jobs: look impressive and
poop on bicycle lanes.

legalizing mdma or any drug for that matter won't reduce the number of people dying from it. it'll just reduce the number of people dying from taking impure shit.
and the state will always be blamed, regardless if drugs are illegal or not.

not necessarily. legalizing will more than likely increase the number of overall deaths because then everybody/more people will have access. just trying to point out that invoking death in this debate may not be the best strategy.
