I get what you're saying and obviously there's a place for the practical

I mean the premise of the design itself, is minimalist. Clean lines + non confusing structure, mathematical if anything. It seems practical at first glance.
But it's not calming by design, it's escaping any possible confusion - like an industrial prison. But now there's a consensus deeming it stylish, which was fine as an alternative like with bauhaus or some industrial design schools - but when there's no function to it in general it actually just becomes 'faschist'.
If anything is added it becomes a feature and not some individual quirk, no randomness and artifacts are now none existant because the production is probably 99% moulding bits.

There was a period where the only cucumbers sold in scandinavia were selected by appearance, picked by how straight and linear they were.

Now the sign of quality in a cucumber is how individually weird and bendy it looks.

We had this discussion at a symposium at my school…

They brought in 3 artists…
2 were working as college professors,
1 was a self taught furniture designer…self-employed multi-millionaire

The two professors were struggling financially to do anything…
The self taught guy was fully booked out with commissions...

The 2 professors were highly involved in historical re-appropriation…
the self-guy was doing uber slick - yet simple, bent wood side tables…

and the argument was that anything with meaning and character
- wasn't selling.

for a number of reasons…
1- they couldn't do it cheap…or relatively cheaper
2- consumers are willing to drop more money on a neutral "palette"…
that will transcend their changing moods and tastes…spanning time
- actually defying the perception of souless disposability -
rather than spending the money on the "paint" - the artifact
that they will tire of or want a change from - and want to swap out…

Now - without a doubt - the professors were doing work of significant
meaning…

The lady was transforming old run down churches
in dilapidated black neighborhoods…
Into pop-up galleries/installations
- that spoke to the history of the exact churches - the neighborhood
and racial/class suffrage in general
..while incorporating new works…all free of charge to the people.

I think she said they sold t-shirts and commemorative prints…
but beyond that it was funded by corporate donations…

The 2nd professor made jewelry in a medieval style.
Hold on…

I want to say his schtick was strictly technical…
He was worried about losing the actual art of metalsmithing
in the traditional methods…
ie. If your designs never call for intricacy
- then you will never make intricacies…
and all the technique behind it will disappear…
He says preserving technique is more important than the democratic ikea.
But it puts the artwork into the availability of a few...
extremely wealthy people- eventually the museum, maybe
- but with elitism.

They were both mad at the self taught guy…
They resented the fact that he didn't attend college
- because that put them in big debt - for 1
and his work seemed self serving…not infused with any "tradition"
wether it be social consciousness - historical/technical respect...

He was just selling mad amounts of little whompy tables…
But he was saying - why blame him for being popular.
He was just making what he could and people were responding to it.

Anti-intellectualism.

They were accusing him of informing the public badly.
And he was saying he was giving the public what they wanted.

The entire thing was summed up with one statement…

"You have to have the table, before you have the bread."

as ambiguous as that may be - but it was an excellent talk.

Yes, seriously, I'm most comfortable on one of those 20mm thick hiking blow-up mats and a doona
making it quick & easy to evacuate or avoid my pursuers.
And I'm too low for bedbugs.

And yeah can see that being an interesting discussion or just conversation.
But really it doesn't neglect the idea that we can have our very own taste in/on stuff. I see this could be dangerous territory, because what I'm saying could be misinterpreted as me saying peoples tastes are just lead by hand too much.

I think it's kind of proof somehow but not ultimately, that if a bed looks like a handheld phone, it's atleast likely that too few people get to impress/direct us as consumers/whatevers.

I guess taste tend to become opinion when we discuss it superficially and in that way, taste might reflect other peoples taste as much as opinions are usually relected within a group - sort of thing. Which means that we can't ever really find out what people individually want (in that market sence where they do studies)
- except by coincidence

I slept on a mat on the floor for years, until my girlfriend at the time got fed up with it and gave me her old mattress when she got some new one.

I have never actually bought a bed. It's quite expensive, yeah?

I confess having had a satisfactory sleep on one of those expensive Japanese straw things
but also slept alright across the seats of a Greyhound bus for weeks across America...
sure, I was off my face and my sacriliac has never recovered but I did lose consciousness.

Yeah, when that mattress started wearing out, I just bought one of those memory foam top mattresses. It's been working great.

i always had the imagination/dream of a bedroom with JUST a massive bed. so you actually enter the room and immediately are on the bed. at least 4x6m.
under the bed 4x18" woofers, on the ceiling hanging down as a 4-point-system some high end heavy duty kids and tops.
somewhere safe inside the wall: a rack with EQ, Gain and one Line Input for mixes and one turntable.
