Hubb, do you think the dance music tradition of DJ-able tunes (and thus the cycle of djing over "live" sets > more DJ-able tunes with predictable structure) is a detriment?

I like it for what it is really. Even just listening on headphones all good dance music makes sense in how it builds. I don't really see it as a limitation of the genre.

Definitely not. Live music is pretty bad in this era. But it can be done.
please tell me you're just talking about electronic music

Who's the artist who has a mask with a controllable penis on the front of it, I'm sure he'd be more known for his live performances (he has some custom built mic /controller)

Yeah that is still a strong point of these genres but...
I think producers that worry wether an intro is mixable on account of someone elses ability to listen to it and understand it, is a bad idea in principle.

No, I'm talking about live stuff. I'm sure you would agree that Jack White isn't Jimi Hendrix or that Jamie Cullum isn't Miles Davis... or that Pink who isn't Nina Simone is still a live act.

Like with proper singers that have had an impact on how we sing, have all been stuck inside a church practising for a decade before they would get to record etc..
People like Adele or Amy Winehouse were common talents.
And a drummer and a bass player just doesn't get to play along side each other for 20 years now.

I don't get what either of you are saying :)

White isn't Hendrix, but I like him way better than Hendrix. Is live music bad nowadays? I don't follow.

worse... than before

The argument with someone like black flag is a bad example because they've existed for that long a time and tbh punk is almost another discussion because it's always 'best' live or it's just recorded in a live setting, (maybe im wrong ?).
There's nothing lost in the translation from recording to live setting.
There's not something they do in the studio that they couldn't do live, not that it's studio records that have half-ruined rock music by itself, though I'm sure a lot of people think that.

But having said that, a lot of what is interesting (im not going to say good) about punk could definitely be applied to an electronic music performance (urrghh)..more than it is right now.
