Yeah I was using virtual machines a bit before but thought I'd try a dual boot (never again)

Wasn't getting any errors, windows 7 just ceased to be... I tried to make a partition for linux but somehow turned my entire harddrive from ntfs to ext4. I pwned myself.

Quite a drag, still thinking about trying to make a windows 7 install CD (I don't have the original CD or Key) Linux feels quite lonely

Yeah, you wiped it then. Oh well... Time for a fresh start.

What distro were you installing out of curiosity? I recently loaded an openSUSE OS on to a server and just let it do the default settings. It automatically created separate partitions from the Windows side of things.

it's manjaro, an arch based distro. Some dodgy russian guy recommended it.

I have never heard of that one.

It's kind of scary thinking about 14 year olds using Kali.

I wish I was a nerd, still never managed to put a file on a usb stick after 3+ hours of trying. Linux cli is fucking terrifying tbh. back on windows now

You should try Unetbootin. It works well.

Linux takes time to learn. You just have to practice with it, preferably with an end goal in mind. Mine was and is to learn how to do penetration testing and vulnerability assessments and also to be a (junior) administrator.

I just spent the last couple of days installing Oracle Enterprise Linux on some servers at work. I'm setting up a DNS server tomorrow and we have to get it installed in the data center by Monday.

I TL;DR'd most of the thread but how is Flak/Backtrack for that? I remember many nights spent nerding on Flak before I weighed the risk of never being allowed near a computer again against irc cred.

Try Ubuntu, its actually a very good, functional distro that works extremely well out of the box. Underneath the hood its basically Debian. You would love it simply because a lot of the stuff you take for granted on Windows works out of the box, just choose the multimedia packages when installing it and you will be off to the races imo. I have it 2 of my old thinkpads. Its solid and it works well just from the GUI (kde or gnome), you wont need to dig in the consoles at all if you dont want to.

hmm yeah I've heard that Ubuntu is newb friendly, but I think if I wanted to have something like windows, i'd use windows.. I like how different some linux distros are, will learn it proper some time.

I have never used PHLAK, but Backtrack is awesome. I still use it even though Kali Linux is the new upgraded version totally rebuilt from the ground up and based on a Debian backend.

Was it Wormcode? Where did he disappear to? He was the main guy that I would go to for tech advice on here.

Dude, it was legendary. He was actually online in the SNH while the police are on the way to his spot to bust him. He knew they were coming and he's frantically trying to wipe his hard drives and he's on a fucking forum telling us about it.
