yeah bro-- opposite side of the same coin, really. would've though about the ensemble if i didn't already have the MH box.
auan-- an idea for you. get a nice converter, something simple, maybe used. I thought MOTU was mac-only but if they work for you-- rock out, the 828's are tanks.
then rather than a full-on mixer, what about a simple 1-rack space mixer? seriously if all you're doing is combining together signals-- anything would work.
then for fun and funk, whatever actual $ you have, spend it on a cool pre/di/ channel strip. used, 2nd hand, whatever. the neve portico's, vintech 72 and 73 series... even the ART stuff (i have a compressor of theirs that's quite cool for what it does) has flavor. so with 3 pieces you get a setup that's much more quality than an all in 1 box.
probably more expensive, too, but it sounds like you don't really need more than 8 ins from a mixer, but you could do with a stereo in from your input.
just an idea-- many ways to solve this one.

I got one
Fostex 454, an old dusty analog piece of crap, but it was designed to go hand-in hand with the tape machine I'm running (Fostex R8 ). Eight channels, each with line-in and tape-in, AND each with direct out, AND 4 busses. A real gem. Probably sounds like shite, we'll see.

Just got it about an hour ago.
Fucking HUGE for an 8 channel mixer. All dusty 80s analog sexxx. I stood staring at it on the chair just laughing.

Bump.
The Fostex I got and me aren't getting along. The EQs are shit, and it misses a lot of really basic features, like a dedicated Aux Return, or a Master Stereo Out (it's JUST the busses
). It's set up kind of like a live mixer, but has no monitor mix, and has things like tape inputs on every channel, like you'd expect from a studio mixer. It's a bit crap, truth be told, and some of the knobs and faders are getting a bit sketchy.
Anyway I'm about to spend money that I don't really have on a Mackie VLZ Pro 1402 that I can't really afford. Someone tell me I'm doing the right thing.

If I were you, I'd figure out what the Fostex IS good for as I saved up for something else. Maybe the EQs aren't crap? Maybe it's 'character'? Maybe you can overdrive the inputs and get some neat sounds out of it?
I dunno mate. If you didn't like the 'quirk' of the Fostex, then maybe you're better off mixing inside the box?
Or if you must go hardware, maybe gearslutz can point you in the direction of a cheap gem?

need more outputs - looking towards the RME or PreSonus
Firestudio ?? need to get to a store on listen to them. Anyone own one of the new PreSonus ?

i dont really have much to compare it with, but i love it and it does get used...
but i didnt buy it...
and if i was going to spend that much money right this minute, it wouldnt be spent on a mixer... probably go towards a computer...
for my personal music, i dont mind mixing inside the computer... the mackie gets used when recording live musicians, or if i want to use some of my effects units... and sometimes hook it up with ableton and do some feedback loop kinda stuff

I'd really like one of those mixers that can control the mixer inside FL studio.
I wouldn't even know where to begin with an analog one. Like, whats the deal? Do you send all of the mixer tracks in the software to the desk? Im not too sure exactly how they work.

lets just say, its a COMPLETELY different way of working. you begin to appreciate software like reason VERY quickly when you work with hardware. fuck i need a patch bay.

Same and I love it! Next on my kt list is an M-Audio delta 10-10 so I can use the other 14 tracks!
