Alex bk-bk wrote:Its kind of sad too that as a business they think that they need to write these bullshit paragraphs that are almost like quasi-reviews. ultimately, theyre not critics theyre vendors and so they should get on with that
I dont think they feel a need to do it, it seems that they enjoy doing it, and i say fair play it entertains them and many others, i dont think thats there's a need to confine people's roles based on what strata of the industry they fall into...bloggers probably arent 'critics' by a similarly exclusive definition, but blogging is one of the best things to happen to music writing since fuck knows. Many a time ive read a blog and thought that is absolute breeze they dont know what theyre talking about, but thats the inevitable result of a lack of editiorial constraints, but you take the information you want from it and leave the rest.
Boomkat are generally a bit poor on dubstep in my opinion, although i do enjoy the input of people with such obviously different angles on the sound, and the comparisons they are able to draw as a result of their different groundings. Bollocks to every man writing about dubstep having to have a pedigree in london culture and necessarily the ardcore continuum or whatever you want to call it. History is obviously important, it goes without saying, but so are new perspectives. So while I see what you mean about the slang, why does that
annoy you?

Probably just because it's one of my favourite songs
One of my housemates yesterday described the review as sounding like "a work experience kid with ideas above their station." Seeing tracks I love dismissed as "one for the ladies" gets me irritated. It probably wouldn't get to me quite so much if my exams were over, but still...
Another quick thing - the number of people that read those Boomkat reviews must be vast. I don't like the idea of this music being represented by people who clearly don't know much about it. It's not like reading a bad blog, as those are generally ignored, but Boomkat are a major site and for many people, especially those overseas, what they read there will dictate their purchases and even whether or not they choose to get involved in dubstep.

na bruv it aint about knowing the ins and uts of london culture at all, but that doesn't justify all the bollocks that goes on there like 'WICKED UP NUFF BASS DESTRUCTION IN THE PLACE KILLING IT AGAIN WITH MAD HEAVY RUMBLEAGE LAMPSHADESTEP COMES PERSONALLY RECOMENDED BY ME'

You could make the same arguement about the amount of rubbish on this forum.
I think U Bastard is the guy that wrote those reviews.

Not really. Everyone knows forums are bullshit. Boomkat are seen to be an authority on electronic music, and they have a huge reputation. The whole anonymity thing makes it seem far less like personal opinion.

my 2 cents for what its worth...
from what i can gather, generally the boomkat reviews seem to be all about pluggin whatever tune they're bangin on about, which is probably why this seems so weird - plus the fact its fairly innacurate when it comes to the monsoon rmx. Sure its the more musical of the two but... melodic? Duno. Still thumps like a muthafucka if you ask me, and as was said above its about as far from cheese as you could want!
But don't get irked, we all know its phat as, n we don't need them to inform us either way. But I agree this review seems really amateurish and badly written... lol the nathan barley comment, i've thought that bout boomkat before. Nuffin to get annoyed bout tho! Gonna buy it regardless of some "quasi-review"....

This is a reasonable concern, but im not 100% with it...the blog analogy still holds for me, as there are many excellent and intelligent blogs which speak about things obviously outside of their expertise, in a derisory manner which carries authority (in my opinion often much more than boomkat). And a lot of stuff on blogs ive seen has been 'this is shit, this is good' etc etc wheras this is just 'for me, personally...'. The tone and presentation is completely different.
In terms of the effect it'll have on purchases, when the quasi-review is talking in terms of personal preference about light vs dark as it were, or allegations of cheese, surely not many people are going to take his word for it and just allow the tune full stop?! It might have some very slight influence on some people's perception of the clip, but they'll probs buy it for I anyway if they prefer darkness, as he recommends they do! His negativity was about one tune, not about dubstep, which they as a site are evidently very enthusiastic about and supportive of. If your concern is whether other ppl choose to get involved, I reckon boomkat have probably had a one of the biggest roles in the spreading of dubstep to other quarters. Also, why would it have greater impact on overseas heads than those from the UK?
Finally, how would we decide who is appropriate to represent the scene? How would one ensure the appropriate separation of interests? Ill take a boomkat mini-review over a label press release any day.
Having said all this, i can see that it might be irking to see a tune you love get played down, but thats a different thing to most of whats been said here

I think you're all being a bit unfair. for one, didnt they do a whole editorial thing on Skream? seems like good free publicity to me.
