That's quite a profound question, debated by Philosophers since the dawn of reasoning, don't think you'll get your answer here, sorry.
IOW "it's basically speed garage but from yorkshire."

Speed garage is from Yorkshire!
speed garage is more organ based! (130 - 137 bpm)
4x4 bassline - Heavier basslines - faster bpm & more grimey. (139 -144bpm)

u what? speed garage is from yorkshire? ARE U SURE?
niche might b, but speed garage? dont think so mate
in fact, while speed garage was a london thing, niche could only have come from yorkshire, its a version of UKG with all the shuffle an soul taken out so northern neanderthals can dance 2 it without getting their gorilla arms in a tangle

Lets get it right yes - NICHE IS A NIGHTCLUB - NOT A MUSIC GENRE!
Speed garage did start in Sheffield in the early 90's.
2 step garage did stat down south, but like nothernsoul the north gave it a better twist and that where the name niche came from as it was the only club in the world that played it.
Down south speed garage orignally wasn't 4x4 beat. It was more two step, but much faster then 2 step garage.

niche may b the name of a night club, which i didnt know (and wondered where the name came from, so thanks) but its also the name of the music. if people call it that, then thats what its called, even if wrong.
and 2 get things really clear: speed garage, 2step, UKG = all different names for the same thing.
dont know where u got the idea any of this started in sheffield from tho. the new 4x4 stuff i can believe, but the rest...no. the term speed garage must b almost 10 years old and has nothing 2 do with the music ur talking about, even if bassline clearly wouldnt exist if it wasnt for late 90s speed garage
EDIT: if speed garage started in sheff in the early 90s can u give us an example of this? I dont know how old ur, but im guessing u werent around in the early 90s. its a well documented fact that garage came about as a spin off from jungle (or more accurately DnB, cos it was later even) which was only itself emerging in the early 90s. u got yr history all mixed up.

this might help

tho i got 2 admit, if theres one thing it makes clear its that nothings all that clear when u talking about the term garage
i understand yr pride in having a local scene thats strong, but dont let the enthusiasm get in the way of facts

Niche opened in Sheffield in 95/96. i was aged 11/12 then and i can remember my old auntes going on about it. So your wrong, this place is the mecca of speed garage.
This didnt play bassline. Its was organ/piano with tip of funky house, with lots vocals and good vibes.
Niche is organ/piano 4x4 house which is lot a slower (134 bpm) than todays 4x4(142 bpm)
This new 4x4 is not niche! Please let me stress this.
Im gonna record some old niche that i have on vinyl.
I heard garage was started by 2gays down London, but this was not niche. it was 2 step.
Im not %100 sure where it all started, but i know Sheffield holds a big key in this.
We be going round in circles with this lol

even if niche was open back then it wouldve just been playing cheesy house or us garage or something, not what u feelin today. like u said, organs n shit, not the dirty bassline sound. not the same thing at all, and anyway most of that stuff wld have been US imports, i doubt any of it was locally produced
"Nowadays the terms "4x4", "speed garage" and "bassline house" are often categorized wrongly as most of today's present listeners brand it as "Speed Garage"."
read the wiki article
but they agree with you that speed garage, 2step etc mean different things tho
ah, its all so complicated

Indeed...
Speed garage was sped up US Garage then it went with a drum n bass feel
Bassline house is basically garage and house mixed using a 4 to the floor beat.
4x4 is like a darker garage far faster and repetative in nature music with both of these together.
2step was r n b and speed garage mixed

bit was imported but a lot of it was from around sheffield and yorkshire, it was a new sound that no had ever hard before hence the name niche ( a new place in the market)
Iam still into my organ stuff, its like saying you like dnb but you dont appreciate the old ray keith tunes
Producers who started niche was such as sbs and barking bros.
Im glad to see my self on that list
