set up a sampler for each sound and play around till it sounds good. Eq each sound to taste. Send desired sound to a reverb bus. Route all tracks to a buss with a compresser and some more eq.

thanks to all who gave honest responses. I was trying to figure out if producers in dubstep, dnb etc use midi controllers to program their drum patterns, or just do it all with a mouse. It seems like most of you prefer the latter. I guess i already knew that heads are cutting up breaks and shit in audio so it was sort of a stupid question.

I know for me, i need to have something tangible to work with in order to bang out decent rhythms. I couldnt just sit there and tweak out with a mouse all night.

peace.

you have to feel the groove with your whole being if you're mousing it out, so there is something tangible. I record myself beatboxing all the time, everwhere, and then go back in the studio and listen until I feel the grooves, then start to translate down. With preconception, working in straight audio has all the advantages of tapping down rhythm.

Yeah, i find that odd, i really enjoy bashing out rhythms physically, i find using the mouse or dragging audio around tends to feel more like endless tweaking.

Not to say a bit of tweaking isn't involved when using the midi controller, but it tends to have a bit more flow. Using audio can actually be quite fun though.
