seckle you make some good points, that electro forum is FUCKED man, which bright spark created a subforum for every individual artist from a to z?

seckle wrote:all big forums have the same dilemma when they reach a certain level of traffic. there has to be one place that serves many functions at the same time and the main board is that place on this site. dubway from day one has been against slow moving forums, and i totally agree with him on that. thats why you've seen this site try many different ideas over the years. some work famously, and some fail famously but we keep trying to make this place organic, and adaptable.

with more than 140 hours of streaming radio per week, well over 60 radio shows and more than 5 radio stations, the radio issue is going to be by far the most contested area of promotion. you can bet that it's not going to get any easier for radio in 2008 either.

labels have it just as tough, because they have to announce releases, start a buzz, a follow up and then further announcements when those tunes get in the stores so like radio, they need the biggest possible impact that this site can deliver.

more than a year ago, we thought about having a "promotion only" sub-forum, but as with the issues surrounding radio, we predicted that people would lose their minds over that idea so that concept got binned very quickly.

what we don't want to do is to make a forum so subdivided and sectioned off that people don't know where to begin. here's an example of that: (no disrespect to electro music or their forum by the way. just using it to illustrate.) :
http://electro-music.com/forum/
Totally. My local forum is like that. There are like 25 sub forums and maybe 50 regular posters. I tried to get him to cut it down to 5 sub forums but no he cut it to like 20 lol. The site will never grow like that. I'm actually a fan of the anarchy style board that is DOA.

Having a promotion forum would kinda be like having an all commercial station on tv. No one would ever watch.

Agreed on the self promotion bit. When I see that shit on the main forum I make it a point to not check out their tunes. I thought you weren't allowed to do that there anyway. Cream rises to the top. It really does. If you are making sick beats the word will get spread.

I don't hold with the 'cream will rise to the top' analogy, artists and labels have to promote themselves, or have someone do it for them, or who will know they are there? The main forum is the best place to do it - I only check out what looks interesting and leave the rest - it's easy done. When I want to know what's happening, who's releasing what and when, I know where to come to find that out - it's all good if you ask me.

The electro-music forum is very tightly moderated and no advertising is allowed except online music - I find it quite a depressing, dead place tbh - this place has balls and is definitely alive!

the dubs section should be used for promotion of tunes
the main forum should be discussion and new on dubstep
no excuse for the promotional stuff on there...

Splendid. I like to think this place might have the same unwritten rules as a local pub. Say what you will, but if it's out of order then you might expect the regulars to take offence. Who's round is it?

Long.
Is that long as in 'ting' or long as in 'for your sensuous touch'?

Yeah I agree Deaps, I don't have a problem with people promoting what they're doing so much, it's just that sometimes the discussions get lost in amongst the self-promotion.

And not having a go at the mods either, you do this unpaid, and generally do it pretty fairly, and it does strike me that people generally dig for the fascist card when they're not allowed to do exactly what they want, which is toddler politics.

Stanton's analogy of the pub is pretty good, you go down there to chat with mates and find out about new things, but lately it's been more dodgy dvd sellers hassling you every five seconds.

Ever since the radio forum has been merged with the main forum the place has been turned into utter chaos..

Sometimes I log on the forum and see a page and a half of new posts in that area. Not knocking the activity of people, but bare people post bare shit - I probably do too, but I think we should just...
