i feel like this is 2001, and trace and fresh are on forums arguing about the tempo getting too fast, and that it's going to ruin dnb. lol.
fast forward to 2008 and we've already had the biggest drop contest in this sound, and now the next territory to muck up will be who can make it sound like 170bpm.
the moment we lose the headnod at 140, just so that it sounds better in a dnb set will be a sad day. i like my dnb at 165 but i love some dubstep at 135.
i hope people try to remember that the vibes are so critical in this sound. it's what makes it so unusual to the rest of dance music out at the moment.
horsepower was never about pounding your face off with midrange pitched amens and reeces. it was about that 140 bounce back then, and hopefully will remain so.

last time i saw ital tek live he was playing a few 170-ish dubstep style tunes, sounded wicked.

I don't think people are really talking about speeding it up to increase the impact or energy. If that was the case, I reckon people would be aiming for around 148 or 150. I don't think experimentation around the 175 mark is going to take over and be detrimental to the head nodding quality of the music.
The vibe I get from this thread is people talking about half step dnb. Imagine something along the lines of Mala's broken dub techno at that kind of speed. I think it'd be quite interesting. Maybe not within the context of a dance where the continuity is so important for the vibes, but as experimentation within the dubstep remit I think it's quite healthy.

a great example is amit. amit's the only one in dnb, imo that's the closest to the feel of this sound, and you don't feel like it's dnb when you're in the dance. he's placing snares and bass drums in places that aren't usual.
amit - erazer - , - lost voices - ,- immortal - <---best examples of what i mean. completely their own genre, own feel.
if you listen to the no u turn sound or source direct sound from 1995-1997, they were also tapped into a zone close to this sound. it didn't have the pulse of 170 always, but you could nod your head to it. that was a critical moment in dnb.
also, i'm not talking about halftime 140 specifically. i 'm talking about all styles at 140.

if i get a moment this weekend, i'll do a 95-98 jungle mix to illustrate what i'm talking about. tunes like computer state, cells, copies, etc.

check out my tune above the trees. i made a real effort to dance on the line between tempos and keep a lot of space in the tune so the bpm is deceptive. its more about a groove than a genre.

I don't think so.. electronic music at 170bpm with heavy bass and percussion is drum and bass. pepper spray is a drum and bass tune regardless of whether or not pinch normally makes dubstep..

i thought this when people started saying that breakage's clarendon sounded like dubstep.
it doesn't... it's a half step, dub dnb track. It's fucking sick - but not that different from a lot of his earlier output, or a lot of other dub dnb. A lot of it already mentioned in this thread...

Totally true, but then Horsepower definitely had more of a house influence than a lot of modern dubstep which seems to mostly be coming from ex-dnb heads (or still practising dnb heads).
I'm dropping the tempo of my tunes to about 126-132 at the moment, not halfstep but just got more of a grooving quality I find, tunes for the hips instead of just the neck

the man needs late 90s digital, surely... esp deadline / fix up... if anyone would like to do a 138 version of that I'd be happy... same for dred bass...

I can recall that Vex'd - Bombardment of Saturn, one of the biggest dubstep tunes out there for me, is actually about 175 bpm in tempo. Try mistaking this one for dnb and you'll end up in hell.
