If buying an external card, be very wary of the midiman quattro, unless you want a card which will switch itself off due to your heating thermostat going on!

I reckon they're just a matter of convenience. If you've got a laptop with USB ports, get a USB one. If you've got a desktop with a bunch of empty PCI slots, get a PCI one.

Back in the day, USB and Firewire ones were just for the laptop market. But I think manufacturers realised they were cheaper to produce, since they didn't have to conform to a certain size like PCI cards, and the market got flooded. There's also I think more people on laptops now than there was 5-10 years ago.

There's also the fact that external interfaces have some or all of their controls actually on the unit, rather than as a software mixer or whatever. But most of those controls are the "set it and leave it" type (you don't really fuck with gain during the course of a tune), so I'd personally rather have them as software, so I've got the peace of mind that I'm not going to knock the gain knob during recording.

It wont be that slow but if you are use to faster its never nice going to something that might be slower eh?
No. I've recorded a full band through my interface using all the inputs and suffered no latency. That is probably more than I'll ever need from now on, but it's nice to know I can.
