i have a lot of time for goldie and his vision with metalheadz. i think any label head in underground music owes him a lot too. legend.

metalheadz from 001 through to about 050 had such a diversity in sound. it was all clearly a similar thread that connected all those releases, but goldie's ear and his knack for putting an aside that would totally contradict the bside together in one 12", was way ahead of it's time. no other label was doing it like that in 96'-01 jungle. sure, there were other labels that had great tunes like no u turn, congo natty, 31 records, cert 18 etc, but none of them had bangers on both sides on more than 50 releases.

from a promotional standpoint too, goldie was ahead of his time, as metalheadz had a label and party to push both ventures at the same time. these were the days before myspace and forums. before hyper promotion. goldie's a don.

Oh he was definitely a man for his time but that time has well and truly passed. Were'nt most clubs/labels of that era putting out compilation discs and parties ? gatecrasher, perfecto, cafe del mar etc and in a lot of ways didn't d'n'b just carry on with what the house guys had already set up ? The whole bangin a side/b side thing has always been a mainstay of 12' releases albeit with one side being slightly more experimental than the other.

What i like about him was obviously the metalheadz logo and how he parlayed his skills into other areas like art and film. That i think is where the example to be followed is in goldie. Agree on the legend, he is that. BTW do you know who designed the metalheadz logo ?

I always thought it was just an exhaggeration saying stuff like that (in a kind of scare tactic "look what happened to dnb " way). But after getting dragged to seeing dillinja for a mates birthday a month or so ago...I couldnt have seen where people are coming from more.

I swear I actually heard tunes using the exact same noises, with almost the exact same rhythm as dubstep tunes...but with OOM TSSH, OM TSH! In the background.

He talks about Dubstep being like early Dillinja. What like Sovereign Melody? Deeper Love? Maybe even The Angels Fell? I'm not sure I agree. Bass has moved on. By its own standards D&B is a little stagnant at the mo in terms of new sounds. Dubstep's moved the boat into a wider direction again.

Yeah but hes very critical of modern dancefloor dnb too, slating the majority of it in interviews calling it 'party tunes'. Hes just an ultra critical dude at times.

Metalheadz was a very strong label for a long time there, no other dnb label really braught together as many good producers and got as many of their best tracks off them. Photek - A. Conciousness B. The Rain C. Into The 90s and Dillinja A. Angels Fell B. Jah Know Ya Big C. Brutal Bass, 2 plates, 6 tracks and theyre all killer tunes, some of the best Photek and Dillinja put out. Im interested to hear this Tempus movie score, see if Goldie has still got some chops up his sleeve.
