Nah, i have liked some breaks in the past but from what my mates play me it sounds like the core of the scene is stagnant. Just like drum and bass.

sure there are some good tunes about, but they aren't the majority in either genre as its much easier to farm out dancefloor nonsense for pillheads. imo.

i've found a few dubstep goodies on planetxusa.com that are listed in the jungle category played @ 45 instead of 33rpms. and they were on sale cause they sounded stupid. i'm not mad. actually almost all their dubstep is on sale for under $9 for the US people.

I got a chance to see Meat Beat Manifesto along with Dub Trio last year. Amazing show.

Dubstep reminds me of early drum n bass, as in there's a feeling in the air that anything is possible... and experimentation is limitless. Nu skool breaks reminds me of slowed down modern drum n bass... over produced and unimagineative.

Basicly,some does and some does not. For instance if you slowdown The Fifth colomn By Photek, it would sound a bit like Burial. I'm on The Fifth Colomn thing at the moment. Ill put it up when it's finished. Some of the stuff on Destructive sounds a lot like OLD d&b(stressing old d&b as most contempary d&b does not sound anything like oldschool stuff). I went to a d&b night a bit back and let me tell you, the music was moronic shite. Sounded like happy fucking hardcore.

There is that of course, bought 12" a few months ago, but I mean, it's hardly dubstep anyway is it? For some reason I thought it was closer to pre-jungle old skool in terms of tempo and vibe, maybe slightly more imaginative than the nu breaks crew.

Went to a breakbeat night last Christmas and it was utter gash - agree with what's been said before, soulless, unimaginative dross. For some reason I thought that breakbeats were supposed to indicate some sort of funkiness, rather than this plodding shite peddled now.

Oh and Meat Beat Manifesto should be required listening for all prospective dub-steppas - Radio Babylon particularly (heard that this was what influenced Liam howlett to make music)

Don't reckon it's true really, dubstep has a different rhythm for me... and a lot more space. Obviously has likenesses to minimalistic dnb/jungle- some of the late 90s stuff on metalheadz for example reminds me of dubstep.

Think it depends what stuff you're listening to, some dubstep does have that sort of dnb on valium feel but then that seems to have more to do with halfstep, which is just one part of the sound, and even then there's far more variation and space within that section than most dnb.

Don't think it sounds the same as old jungle, but there was a certain freedom and possibilities with the music that's disappeared into formula. The really early jungle incorporated dancehall, techno, hip hop and dub, and to my mind had some real soul when at it's best, which is how I view dubstep.

Seems like a lot of the people that are more open to the sound that I've played dubstep to are from a more IDM and ambient background. Was playing that Breezeblock Burial mix to some friends and they thought it more like Future Sound of London than dnb or even garage.

Have tou heard Mercof's minimal techno styles? What does IDM mean?

The Nut used the expression 'Upside Down Drum and Bass"... made me laugh it did.

To me dubstep is more than just beats and bass though, which sets it apart from alot of dnb, it's a whole vibe that pumps out from your speakers. Slowed down dnb doesn't have that and wasn't created in the first place with that type of vibe in mind so I don't understand how they can be compared.

IDM = Intelligent Dance Music.

Dubstep reminds me of a mesh of Basic Channel / Rhythm & Sound and the german minimal techno of labels like Force Inc and artists like Pole. I'm into the Jamaican Trojan records dub as well.

I'm a converted DnB head, been listening to DnB since '97, but the excitement has gone, dubstep feels far more exciting now. But then I don't need to preach to the converted.
