agree in part but there is currently some more innovative stuff being made which isn't really anything like deep house or funky house in a traditional sense. i think something more concretely 'new' will emerge out of it sooner than a few years.
Ok, maybe before "a few years" time, but as it stands its still simply House music with deep, tribal, techy influences. Renaming it "Funky" is typical London hoodrat - let's jump on something new and make it OURS, cos we're bad and we make mooooves blad. (Ok, not quite, but does the contempt come across cleary enough?!)
Oh, and shameless plug. Last day in March, get the March mix if you haven't already got it!!

Deep and soulful vibes. I'm actually listening to it now, and I've just overheard the plumber who's round fixing our boiler ask my mum "is the record stuck or something!?".. I think what actually he meant to say was "the mixing is as tight as a virgin is to Mandingo", so you know it's gota be good!

I guess. I mean banging a femur bone against a skull must have got boring pretty quickly hey.
Still, doubt the caveman deeshays were as egotistically acrid as some of these dickheads today. I really do dislike "their" whole "new" "movement", as you can tell..
Anyway, hope you like the mix. Let us know what you think!

yeh i think i mentioned this before; Apple has got some heavy beats and they r kinda cutting edge in the context of underground music in the uk at the minute, but it doesnt take a genius to do wot hes doing, ie his music sounds grimey as if he has come from that scene but his rythms seem to be the antithesis to the bait 4X4 beats in house. if he was just to have soulful/funky melodies and broken beats then it would just be broken beat. so i can definetly see them grimey melodies and his style being involved in something new, but it just seems to be the logical next progression...

Not sure about the MC's though sounds abit wrong on this kind of music. Maybe it's just this particular MC being a tad Swag.

every third topic on this whole forum discusses some element of UK urban music being a rebranding of an older genre; garage- dubstep, speed garage- bassline house, now this. etc.
I agree with what you all say about the emergence of this, but they aren't relabelling it- it is still called "UK House and Funky"- The important thing is its a new emerging scene for the UK underground. If you have been to any of the raves or afterparties coming out of this scene, they are invariably different to typical house raves, and this is why it is a new scene with a new moniker, not just because of the nature of the music.
Also, the scene isn't really on it's feet as a UK thing yet, as it is so new and there aren't even enough productions by homegrown talent to compile a full "UK set"; as it is they borrow a lot from other house genres, africanism, deep and soulful house, which I think is cool- highlights the influences of the emerging scene and what we can expect from future stuff. It is just an evolvement as dubstep was originally an evolvement of 2-step, garage, and dub/reggae music. But crucially, it is still very early days.
I for one am a big fan and have found a resurrected interest in house music in part due to this scene and oldies like Kerri Chandler, DJ Gregory, Karizma, Liquid People. I cannot wait for summer sun, and sitting sipping a cocktail to these tunes with some friends. I been to a couple of the big raves and afterparties in the scene, but don't think the gloomy, cold, depressing weather is very suitable at the minute
Some tracks and stuff I recommend, away from the well-known ones;
Let me know if you need more recommendations...
Natalie Williams - Happiness (MQ Dub)
JC (Very young, upcoming producer) - Almost
DJ NG - Titan
Tribal Audio (MA1) - The Abyss (available at junodownload)
Ben Westbeech- Hang Around (Karizma Dub)
DJ Spen - Gabryelle

^ I understand what you're saying, but tbh, its all house, regardless of the scene. You might be able to say that about other styles of music, that the scene itself is cause enough for a rebranding, but with house, its all been done. MC's (see hip house), all different types of 'raves' and clubs, rewinds, all of it has been done before with house, so regardless of what is going on in a particular corner of the world and with what influences, at the end of the day its still house. I dont think it needs a new name until its truely new, which I admit with the influence of the new players in the UK scene, there is a potential for it to become. Im all for it too, btw. House has been stagnant for too long.
House is undergoing a huge resurgence here in LA too, with the newer 'jackin' style of house, but its also still house. Its even moved from the clubs back to the underground and is on its way back to the clubs.
And, to be fair, Ive seen a lot of people on here and other corners of the web calling it just 'Funky' or 'UK Funky' which implys that it is something new. I honestly get pretty tired with all these new genre names myself, and Im glad the sub-genres really havent gotten too bad or been taken too seriously with dubstep. Ive always said I play house or dnb or dubstep or breaks, not deep/tech/tribal house with a SF feel, or atmospheric liquid jump tech from Bristol.
Unless it truely is something new, a la Skweee. That shit deserves its own name because it really doesnt sound like anything else out there.

Indeed, they're full of the same rudeboys who'd run around saying House music was for "gays blad" a few years ago. But now, in a pair of jeans that cost them half their months wages and a primark jumper, oh and a single leather glove with a bottle of champagne between (a minimum of) 6 of them, they're suddenly into the sounds.
I despise them. Whilst I love the music, I hate the nights with a passion. Full of tramps, they fucking disgust me.

@ Baron- the appeal doesn't last after the 5th or 6th time with live PA's etc. believe me- gets boring pretty quickly. Though their tshirts are pretty cool. And I rate some of their other stuff- check their remix of MA1's Right Here.
@Gash- someone has a lot of contempt

Cannot deny that the scene has created musical interest amongst a crowd who normally wouldn't care though don't you think. But yes granted they are not for everyone
your description reminds me of the champagne garage days

Or any night out in Croydon as it happens (TIGER TIGER THIS AND EVERY THURS VIP U KNO...

..seriously though I will be there- kebab and croydon tart in tow)
which nights have you been to out of interest?

I certainly do. Ignorance frustrates me man. And I think it's partly to do with the fact I
hate hoodrats and everything about them: the way the look, talk, smell, look, smell, are, be.. everything. I want to be able to enjoy this kind of music without having to deal* with them, but apparently it's part and parcel of this emerging "scene".
And I've been to a few random ones, the main night I can remember was at The Priory in Ealing but I've not been for a while.
*Maybe I'm too hung up on it and should learn to see past it, but until that happens..
JUST REMEMBERED...
I think the root of my problem with this whole ridiculous idea of "Funky" is reading an interview that Supa D did (95% it was him anyway) a little while back. He had the cheek and audacity to say HE, specifically, was responsible from bringing the deeper sound of House to the London scene.
The fucking joker.. ! I was playing (a mainly Garage set) on Freeze FM at the time but also slipping in some Housier bits into my shows, and the other part of this interview where he claimed he was "showing" all UKG Dj's about House and we (being Garage DJs) were all copying him.. can you believe the cheek!!? Kinda pissed me off on behalf of all Garage DJ's who were dabbling in House. Maybe it shouldn't have bothered
me and I'm not sure how long that eejit has been DJ'ing, but I've been playing House AND Garage for about near a decade - absolute egotistical mug.
Anyway...

I see what youj're saying and don't know the interview in which he said that, but he has been spinning house in the garage scene for a good 3 years or something. As it happens, have a listen to the new rinse cd mixed by him- might not be your favourite person, but this mix showcases the best UK talent in the Funky scene, and shows a lot for the development of the scene from the radio shows which normally incorporate a lot of Deep and Soulfull House and US Stuff, because the UK thing is still too young to have enough tracks to showcase! Still, its a good indication of things to come, with the more grimier productions.

its kind of funny u say that, me and my mate write our "own sound" and to be honest between us two plus others we know who r on the ting; we have enuff up to standard tracks to last at least 4/5 hours! i dont see how this whole new scene with a big handful of dj's dont "have enough" tracks to showcase.. alot of the new funky scene is blatently alot to do with the rinse lot trying their hand at some crafty marketing, after seeing the succes of dubstep i reckon

It's not that they don't have enough tracks...it's about the quality of the tracks. It would take time for producers crossin over from the grime scene to really develop their own sound and the 4x4 beat and the soca feel you get with some tunes as well. There weren't that many producers in the early days, but more new ones are cropping up regularly now that the scene is a bit more established. Plus the CD is marketed on being a UK first with a selection of homegrown talent- couldn't put a weak selection of tracks on there from only a handful of producers in order to promote a new sound and scene for the UK underground.
I see what you're saying about the Rinse lot really pushing the sound (perhaps marketing), and its questionable cos a lot of the push for funky comes from the people like Geeneus who we've seen transverse many genres before. However, I think there is genuine passion for the music and yea there is a bit of marketing (Casa Funk events and especially the new CD) to make the most of the hype surrounding it, but it is only natural to be excited about something new and upcoming, and I think this is more the reason than any marketing. Rinse has always been about the music first, and despite their popularity, promotion and now CD compilation ventures, they stay true to UK urban music as a whole.
Having given the SupaD CD a couple more listens- really enjoy the selection on it, although some of the tracks on it are quite old (Tell Me is like the funky equivalent of 'Night' in the fact its been around for some tiime, and has just been signed to Ministry so perhaps a big commercial thrust is on the way)...I'm pretty sure this was mixed around the time Blackdown did the big interview. Not too sure about the mixdown of the whole thing tho..seems a bit rushed and not concurrent. I've heard much better radio sets from Supa on Rinse before (tho MA1 is the DJ I enjoy the most of those pushing the sounds- plays some pure deep house classics next to new UK productions from his own label--check out his carnival music show for something a bit more housey with all the africanism and soca vibes thrown in)

Don't get me started on what I think of the whole rebranding of an already existent style of House - jumped up, urban London DJ's thinking they've invented the deeper side of House. Though I do admit, the sound is slowly developing.. perhaps in a few years a new sub-genre, god forbid it actually be called "Funky" (I mean, come on!), might give credence to their efforts today. But, as it stands, it's simply Deep House music.
ps. Do you know if that Supa D "Rinse 3" CD being sold is mixed? I'm assuming it is, would be awesome if it isn't, few tunes on there I'd like to have.
My thoughts exactly "funky"....im sure a more fitting name can be given here...
