we're on 11k and... well i live with my rents cos i'd have to be stupid to move out... but the other runners aren't londoners. 1 shares a flat with his girlfriend in tooting bec... which is a really nice place to live, and the other is in shoreditch with his best mate. disgusting area... crackheads camp out on their doorstep. but they like skinny jeans and stupid fringes and crap like that so it's fine for them. both runners ARE always broke tho. it helps if u find a house that's near a lidl

london weighting does not cover the increase in living expenses but there are a plethora of places to balance your clubbing habits with....
lidl, aldi, poundshop etc its not the finest of food stuffs but you can easily cut monthly bills in half
in terms of where to live theres a lot of things to think about travel & associated costs are a big 'un, the type of shops nearby, obviously crime etc
a mate had a studio flat in brixton, nice but small place, £105k - communal garden and swimming pool - literally down the road from mass, a fair bit of crime around there and not the nicest area to be stumbling home alone at 3am but you have to pick your compromises
also the flat share option is really good for getting bearings (try and get two months upfront get your bearings and leave!), living with strangers is VERY hit and miss
if you plan on living alone i think as a very rough guide expect an outlay of £500 per month rent plus council tax of probably £110 and bills at roughly £50
so if you say a 15k job gives you about £990 after tax then minus the 650 above and you got £340 to cover food, transport, going etc - ie £85 per week
if you share a flat cut the council tax and bills in half
also a bit of trivia - the borough of Wandsworth has the lowest council tax in the country!

yeh u gotta be careful with teh travel thing... if you're past zone 4 or need to get a train in, and then u'll need the tube as well... you might actually be better off or at least equally well off living a bit closer into london for a higher housing cost.

You all are bunch of pussies. If you really want to live somewhere - just do it. You know the lingo, you have some sort of friends there and been there before. It won't kill ya - you get experience good or bad, but it all will make you a little bit more wiser.

also good if u can get a job that feeds u. i get my lunch paid up to £5 a day plus we've got bread, sandwich stuff, cereal, soup, crisps, pastries... so we're cool for breakfast and snacks. that's an instant saving of £100 a month.

same here. i think we're part of the minority tho. i think it's mostly only professional services firms (ie. agencies) that can afford to do that cos it all gets charged back to clients...

(has been a very nice perk over the years tho)

last time i rented in london was paying 750p/month plus c/tax and bills but that was in Earlsfield, which is one stop on the maniline from clapham junction and (at the time) was a veeery nice area with bugger all crime and plenty of decent bars about
if we are talking budgets then you can get places between 500-600 p/month - studio flats primarily, or even one beds towards croydon/thornton heath - all comes down to what compromises you're happy to make, eg a lot of places are studio flates with shared shower/wc, or shared kitchens etc

Living in the sticks just cos it's cheaper is not the one. It's fine living in Croydon if you were brought up round there and have a load of mates about, but if you're just moving to the city it's a 90% probability that most of the folk you know will be living a lot more central that Harrow or Croydon and probably east.
Avoid West London, it's dull as a wobbler and takes an age to get anywhere you'll want to go out in. (Sorry Reso)
