I disagree with all the things posted here. Shackleton's new stuff is quite far separate from what else is happening in the realm of dubby techno with the exception of the Hustler remix. I think his new stuff, especially the Mary Anne Hobbs mix is a huge step up from all of his previous work. These new songs especially are a complete new realm of his own, and I think it's a bit harsh to reduce it to dubby techno. The music still has as much in common with dubstep as it does techno in many ways.

I think people should download his mix for Mary Anne Hobbs to hear how forward thinking Shack's new stuff is:

fair play dude, I like Sam's tunes but I wouldn't hear them if it wasn't for the Skull Disco label - I'm not big into the whole chuggy/minimal sound, so I'm not necessarily qualified to tell you whether it's much better/worse than similar things.

as for old/new stuff, he was playing out and writing tunes waay before he did his live shows - i've got old CDs of his from years back and it most definitely is quite removed from what he does now in tempo and style, if not in vibe.


Anyways, my point was that whilst Shack never wanted to be pigeonholed as 'dubstep', his music on the earlier Skull Disco releases, the plates on Scuba and Clandestine etc were far closer to dubstep in style and tempo than anything he does now - which is much slower for starters.

All I said was I'm interested in how Shack still gets a lot of love when his music is fairly removed from dubstep these days, and similar-sounding artists don't even get a mention.

Likewise, Headhunter has a 120bpm tune coming out soon on a techno label, and it's more techno than dubstep, but I'm sure it will garner more attention in dubstep circles than any similar techno tune by a non-dubstep producer...

Yeah but that's obviously going to happen isn't it, I mean most people don't have deep knowledge of more than one or two genres. And this is dubstep forum - people are obviously going to post about dubstep producers doing techno more than techno producers doing techno.

i think the connections that people like shackleton make are what keeps me interested in dubstep as a whole. dubstep has always been more of a movement than a particular sound for me. sure, tempo has a lot to do with defining the genre but i have always warmed to dubstep because of the looseness of the sound itself.

if sam's sound is moving into dubtechno then good on him. i'd much rather he evolved than churned out variations of blood on my hands for another 20 releases just for the sake of remaining "dubstep". good on him for keeping a dynamic approach.

and as for him sounding different/similar to other releases/artists, yes and no and so what? In an increasingly homogenous music market, I'm glad any music like his gets any attention at all.

well sure, I'm not sure why everyone's getting a but arsey or thinks I'm cussing Shackleton. Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but I'm just interested in the way (historical) context appears to affect people's taste...

well maybe in some cases your right, but surely its only a good thing if it means that these people are introduced to something they otherwise might have ignored otherwise.

this release is fucking bonkers, i listened to the rope tightens constantly for an entire day. my mind was warped - the vocals just slowly dissolving my head from the inside out. then went on and played it out at a hip hop night, just had to do it.

shackleton has always said - i never said i make dubstep people just expect it from me.
he takes pride in his music and i think this is a very brave and fwd thinking release from a great producer.

Has anyone got audio on this?

Shack's written some of the most inspired, original and exciting music this century...I'm sure there's lots more to come and regardless of genre I'm looking forward to it.

definitely. it's interested to see how people will react to a certain tune based on either the context of the scene it's affiliated to, or the producer it is by. just look at the ridiculous over-reaction to that pendulum tune purely because it is by them, and not (in most cases anyway) because of how the tune actually sounds, which i have to admit is pretty awful anyway

it's a 4-track 12" - Rope Tightens & Branch is Weak on one side. Haven't got the record to hand so I can't remember what's on the flip.

fucking big tune. I love shackleton's 4x4 stuff, that constant kick pulse is almost like a skeletal base from which he can hang all of his intricate rhythmic flourishes and stuff. It just works so well imo. Death is not final sounds amazing in a minimal techno mix.
